Looking to buy a SM electric auger this fall and can’t decide if the forty volt is worth extra $, I would like the 8” bit and would end up buying a second battery for either model, anyone try both and notice any major differences?

40 will give you more holes…depends on if you drill 10 or 100

FWIW, I have a Milwaukee fuel and last year in early January I’d get about 40 holes with an 8”

I have no experience with the 24v but the 40v I have is great. In regards to you planning on a second battery, if you’re not in a huge hurry you could shop around when it gets to that Black Friday timeframe. A few years ago a lot of places were doing promotions where you got a second battery free; I got mine from Cabelas and they were doing that at the time (just might take a while to get it).

I have the 24 volt. It’s super light and cuts smooth. It’ll last about half a day hole hoping. The 40 volt seems twice as heavy, but it certainly has more torque and the battery life is way better. If you drill 30 holes or less a day you’d love the 24. If you drill more than that you would want to buy the 40 or a second battery for the 24. I’m hoping to find a deal this fall on a second battery for my 24

I think I’m going to be getting a 24v at the show this year…..if it happens, fingers crossed. And probably a spare battery as well.

This is pretty much spot on. Can’t go wrong with either of them, but 24V is definitely my go to until the ice gets thick. Mid to late winter it’s pretty nice having the 40V for drilling a lot of holes through lots of snow, slush, and ice.

Being that small, is the 24 just as sturdy/solid?

Does it seem like the 24 is working harder to than the 40? Maybe it won’t last as long?
