Bought new 40v strikemaster 8 inch about 1 month ago. Not terribly impressed so far. Stops numerous times when grilling hole and almost stops when breaking through ice. Did I get a lemon or any tips to correct. This started on first holes and have max of 30 holes drilled. Do I return it for different one or go different route. Thanks for any help

Don’t push hard, just let it cut. I have 24v but it’s same issue probably.

Yep..this. They just need light pressure. There was a thread a couple weeks ago with a guy asking the same thing on a 24 volt. Just takes a little getting used to.

There’s been a million, maybe a hundred, posts on this over the years. Welcome to the wonderful world of Strikemaster. It’s the good old “what auger is best” debate

Never had mine cut out. But as others said there is no need to push on the auger. The 24v is notorious for this but the 40v i didn’t think so unless heavy pressure applies. My 40v rips

Definitely better with out fown ward pressure but still cuts out alot and especially when breaking through bottom of ice. Never used electric before. Cuts fairly fast when it’s cutting but stops at least 3 times per hole and almost always at break through.

Agree with bearcat, have not had any problems with my 40 volt SM.like others have said they don’t need any pressure put on them.

Yeah that sounds funky. I would put a email out to them and make sure you tell them that it is with no down pressure and it happens every hole. I wouldn’t be thrilled about that. I was drilling last weekend burying it to the head almost without clearing the bit and it just ripped through the entire process.

Yea something is wrong. I’ve never had mine cut out even when drilling down to the head. Sometimes mine will grab at the bottom of the ice if you don’t clear it half way through and I can say from experience that thing will wrap your arms up like a pretzel by the time you can let go of the button.

Ask for a warranty claim on your battery.

I run a Dewalt on a Clam plate. The only time mine cuts out is if my battery is low. You might have a bad battery.

I would agree something is wrong. I have a 24 and it rarely cuts out.

When it was new it wouldn’t go a couple inches without cutting out. I called SM and brought it to their shop in Eden Praire. They replaced the power head and both my batteries. Worked perfect since.

My guess is they’ll take care of you…great customer service in my experience.

I’ve seen a cold battery cause this type of “cutting out” when drilling. If it is less than 20 degrees I either store my batter in my bibs pocket or in a soft-side lunch bag with a couple handwarmers. This makes a world of difference!

When I was out last week in the bitter cold one of my batteries stopped working. I left it sit outside for too long. Usually I keep them in the truck when I’m not using them and I don’t have the cold weather issue.
