Stren Crappie Mono Hi-Vis Gold

  • #1600569

I’m a tightliner and have been using Cortland Ice Mono (hi-vis yellow) ever since they stopped making Stren Ice Hi-Vis Gold. I’m wondering who out there is using Stren Crappie Mono (hi-vis gold) for ice fishing and how it compares to the former in terms of limpness, visibility, and breaking strength. I’m considering buying some for next ice season if the reviews are good.

Can’t say too much about the 2 lb version of the stren high vis crappie mono, however, I did find some 4 lb spools at fleet farm near me and bought a couple. I spooled it on one ice rod for fishing crappies at night with spoons because we usually have walleyes mixed in with the crappies. In my experience which has been about 3 outings with it the 4 lb stren crappie mono has been as good as I remember the stren ice high vis gold. Seems to have very low memory and the diameter is pretty low as well. So take this review with a grain of salt, but I like it thus far. Also if you are looking for another high vis line, check out the vicious panfish ice stuff, really like the 2 lb stuff that I have spooled on right now. Hope this helps you out.

Daniel, I only use 2# Crappie Mono in Hi-Vis gold and as far as I can tell it is the same line as the Stren Ice. The even better news is that it is less expensive with the 200 yard spools as opposed to the old 110 yard Ice spools.

Curiois do the waters you guys fish with the 2# seem to have the shyness factor with the high vis? Hear alot on this 2# stuff

I used stren 2# Hi-Vis until they quit making and went to Vicious 2# Hi-Vis and liked it better than the stren. I am know using Gamma in the Hi-Vis snow yellow it is a liitle smaller diameter than most other brands and it is really limp with little to no memory and high breaking strength. I like the Gamma the best. I do think the Crappie Mono Hi-Vis gold is the same line as the Stren ice. I know the Gamma snow yellow color is a new color this year and don’t know if it is on there website but all you need to do is give them a call. Maybe they will come out with a Hi-Vis gold? I have never had a problem with line shyness.

nhamm, I’d use 10# if it was as thin and flexible as 2#. I don’t use it for fish shyness, I use it because the light lures I use don’t work well on heavier line. I use the Hi-Vis because I am primarily a shallow water long rod hole hopper and I can see the line against the dark of the hole from 6 feet away.
