I haven’t heard of anything on that part of the Cannon River. But the DNR in that area has always told me to fish the holes along that stretch of water. With this rain and fast run off it could slow the bite down. If you get a chance to fish it please feel free to post how you did. Thanks, Bill

Well, a buddy and I finally got around to canoeing the Cannon from Cannon Falls to Welch this morning. Boy, it was a hot one out there. Ended up catching around 30 fish, consisting of smallies, walleye, sauger, largemouth, and northerns. The biggest fish were a smallie that went just over 17 inches and a northern that was around 32 inches. They bit on pretty much everything we threw at them, including Bombers, floating Raps, sinking Raps, Rooster tails, and spinners. The water wasn’t all that high, and the current isn’t very strong, either, considering last week’s downpours.

Hey mwchiefs, You may want to pass along any fishing reports you have on the Cannon River from Cannon Falls to Red Wing to the DNR. The DNR has been asking SEMSA, the South East Minnesota Smallmouth Alliance, to use a fishing diary and track our fish catching along that stretch. Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten far along those lines. Most of our fishing has been the Zumbro River and Root River farther south. Information that would be helpful to the DNR would be as follows; Date, Air Temp, General locatoin (be as specific as you like), Number of Anglers, Start and End times, Stream Flow, Water clarity and of course Species of fish, Length of fish and whether or not you kept that fish. This is a lot of information, but the DNR may still have some Angler Diaries available that make recording this information very easy. Send your fish data or Angler Diary request to [email protected]
Specifically, the DNR is trying to collect more data on smallies in Southern Minnesota, but the information on other fish in the waters you fish is equally important. Good Luck and Fish On! Lew

Lew, I hadn’t heard about this. I’ll check into it. I have all that data. Maybe it will be helpful. Thanks!

How should I guy go about fishing the Cannon River from Cannon Falls to Welch? Wade or Float???? Where should I park if I wade and where are the best spots???? Any information would be helpful. Dad took the boat this week and has left me stranded and I was hoping to try something different.
