Fishing the Cedar?

I do a lot of fishing on the Cedar around the Waverly area. I have been catching a lot of smaller fish(walleyes, northern) lately. I was wondering if anyone has any pointers on getting into some bigger fish this time of year on a small river like the Cedar or Shell Rock?

Hello Ashford,I’ve had the same problem on the ceder in waterloo.I was told to try on the outside edge of where the little ones are or a bigger bait.
Maybe the bigger fish are recovering from the spawn, all though my dad caught 2 northern sunday that were full of eggs.Don’t know what’s up with that.
Where around waverly do you fish? Hope you get into them.

I have also had those same problems on the Cedar both up around Austin/Otranto and down here around CR. I think limited mobility on that river is my biggest problem. I fish where there’s convenient shore access, and so as expected and decent fish have either been taken out or have seen so many lures that they’re just not interested. This is, of course, all speculation.

I have had some good luck on both cats and smb’s, and of course, the carp are everywhere.

My best luck on these streams or any small stream is to get off the beaten path. Like Gianni said, all the spots that are easy to get to, are going to be tough to produce good sized fish. Also, another pointer is to try the wapsi, big northerns in that baby, that and the little cedar. Again, these two are a little more off the beaten path then the big cedar and such. I can’t go into to much more depth without writing a novel, but if you need to pick my brain pm me. Im by no means an expert, Ive yet to get a 10+ northern this year, but Ive had three on that would have made it easy, now only if I could get the landing part down…….

Thanks for the info guys I had been fishing a lot of spots around Waverly that get a lot of fishing pressure. The smallmouth fishing has been decent. Hopefully if I get a chance to move down river where there isn’t quite as much fishing pressure I will do a little better on the bigger walleyes.
