Mike Smith, owner of Hooked On Fishing Bait and Tackle in Rochester says the crappies are starting to turn on at Lake Zumbro on the Zumbro River. The bite is not yet the hot shallow bite that everyone loves but things are starting pick up. Don’t forget to get your bait and tackle needs from Mike on your way out to catch some of those crappies. Thanks, Bill

hey bill, that’s good news. i’ll have to get out and try it sometime this week/end. i’ll let you no how i do.

have you (or anyone else for that matter) ever heard of people catching crappies in the smaller parts of the zumbro? i’ve fished it quite a bit in the summer but have mainly caught SMB, never a crappie. it seems like there could be some secret hold outs for a school of crappies on some of those streches between silver lake all the way to the lake.

They do catch them in Silver Lake. Other than that I have not heard of any place else. Maybe someone who knows will post. Thanks, Bill

well, it was just SOOOOOOO nice out last night that i thought i’d head out to the lake and try a little crappie fishing. we fished from about 4:30-dark and caught maybe 6-8 good size crappies between 9-11″ . they’re deffinatly not shallow yet, but they are there and willing to bite, you just have to find them. we just fished the steep banks with little jigs and minnows.

along with the nice crappies we also caught 6 SMB, 3 LMB, 3 white bass, 1 sunny, and 1 snagged gaint carp. we were bitten of several times by some really toothy critters. i also got quite a fight out of a big ol’ jumbo cat on my ultralite rod until he finally wrapped himself in the trolling motor. quite the variety for just pitchin’ little jigs to some structure.

There is a slow moving stretch from the bike path south of the rec center…to the park off of westriver pkwy lots of wood/logs/brush etc… You will hook a few smallies and Largies but there are a few slabs in there. also try south of the 75th st bridge!!!!
