Fished the Grant River in SW WI today for trout. Targeted a stretch of water about 2 miles below the designated trout water in the hope of catching bigger trout. The water was fairly clear although the Grant as well as other streams in our area are low for this time of year.
On this day a number 9 Rapala in the shiner color seemed to be what they wanted. They being brown trout and …smallmouth bass. Most of the bass ranged in size around 15 to 16 inches. The trout were also large ranging from 13 to 18 inches. No big bruisers though. The bass were caught in slower moving current while the trout came out of much faster water. It seems from the early season that their is a very large population of trout far below the designated trout water in the larger pools downstream. Has anyone else found this to be true this year?
Also, bass season IS NOT open in Wisconsin until next week, the bass I caught today were not targeted, just a pleasant surprize.
