This’ll be more like a report from the 29th and from late Nov. Early Dec. because I haven’t been posting as much as I should. The end of Nov. and Early Dec. were very good for us as far as numbers go, but size was terrible, many 20 fish days, but the top end on size was usually less than 14″. On Friday we finally found some bigger fish (I’ll post pics when I find my USB cable). After the rains earlier this month we’d had some trouble connecting with fish, so we went out in an apprehensive mindset for the last hour and a half before dark. I targeted a spot adjacent to a rock bar that had been good for me earlier in the fall, but moved upstream and to an inside bend on the transition area to avoid the heavy flow. As soon as we moved out of the flow we started to get bit, and had 8 ‘eyes between 15″ and 23″ in the hour before dark. BFT precision heads were the ticket for us in 3/16 and 1/8 ounce. The fish seemed to want meat today, with fatheads accounting for many of our fish, B3 blade baits also put a couple in the boat for us. One note of interest was that these fish started out in about 7″ of water, but nearing dark we began to catch fish right up on the bank. OUr boat placement technique was the same as I described in the earlier post on winter walleyes. I know I’ve forgotten stuff, so hit me up w/ questions, Good fishin’!!

I’ve always done better with a jig tipped with a minnow too. Sometimes i tie on a bucktail jig and tipped with a minnow that combination seems to trigger them too. Were you working the very bottom and in slower current, not no current but slow current next to faster water. Some days the fishing looks like it should be great and it isn’t, some days the weathers beautiful and warm with blue skies, those days produce too and i usually go around 10 and fish until around 2, those hours seem to be the best on those days. Fishing early in the morning or late afternoon hasen’t produced like mid day has. I began telling myself that the fish don’t get out of bed until 10 on those days so why go.

Great report Sean, thanks! Man, that is shallow. They must have been corralling minnows up there. Did they smack the jigs or just pick them up?

    thanks,

    Andy,
My bite got more aggressive the closer it got to dark. The first two fish I caught, which were coincidentally the biggest fish we got that day, barely even hit, I felt the first one just swim off with the jig like a bass, a good rod was a must on these bites or you definitely wouldn’t detect them. On a side note, those fish were laying directly in a current seam in the slow water. The fish that I causht up shallow absolutely teed off on the jig, no guessing about what was going on.
