I haven’t been out on the Cedar all year. Hopefully this weekend I can sneak away for a morning and git-r-done.

Bass on the ponds seem to be finishing up spawning and moving to shallow summer habitat, so hopefully I can get one to chase a spinnerbait.

The river looks like it’s rounding into shape, but I haven’t heard any good reports recently. I think the catfish are turning on. I think the bass are about done, if not already done. I know they have slowed down a lot lately. I don’t do catfish so the golden time is over as far as I’m concerned. Bring on September!!

Yeah, i have all but about given up on the Cedar. To me, it’s pretty much worthless in the summer because it gets so cloudy and murky, and the water levels fluctuate so much. Like you said, bring on September! Cool, clear water!

I went last night about 7:00 and got 3 stripers, they weren’t hitting hot and heavy like a month ago but the ones i got hit it hard. The guy wading next to me got 4 sheepheads, 4 catfish and a couple of smallies about 12″ while i was there fishing on the bottom with crawlers and a couple splitshot. They were hitting good and if we don’t get alot of rain today im going again this afternoon befor its forcast to rain harder tonight. A friend and i are going to Rathbun monday, his neighbor just came back and said everybody was getting crappies and whitebass plus a couple boats he saw were getting a few walleyes. He said a couple crappies he got were 14″ and a couple good size whitebass that were bigger than the crappies.

I was out last week when the water was still muddy. NO trouble catching pike (sucker minnows) but really didn’t target eyes due to poor water clarity, one would think the bite should pick up as the water gets lower and visibility increases……… Patiently waiting.

I was out yesterday in Cedar Rapids. I didn’t figure that I would do too well because of the 30° temp drops and cold front conditions.

All in all, the fishing well exceeded my expectations. Water temperature is down a lot from what I expected, with morning surface temps around 66°, warming to a balmy 66.8° by the time I got off the water at 10:30. The wind was cold, air temps hovering around 50°.

I was doing some bass fishing. With the cold temps, I used a jerkbait as my search method, and a senko-style plastic to cover particular areas. The big fish were all in fallen trees and timber with 2-3 feet of water underneath it. Without fail, every down tree along the steeper banks held a good fish. Getting them out was a little bit of a challenge, but with some heavy gear it was doable in most places (one tree was too thick, and I ended up loosing the fish twice and moving on).

There were a few onsey-twosey fish in open water along the steeper banks, but for the most part these were all smaller fish, with the 2+ pounders all sticking close to and in the cover.

Fished the Cedar in Waverly this morning above the dam. Tried trolling, nothing. Casted shad raps, wife caught 1 catfish. Jigged with leeches and managed only 1 eye in 6 hours of fishing. Pretty slow. Heading to P10 in the morning, bright and early before the water ‘s hit the water.

Had to get out to test my new Humminbird 937c. It arrived yesterday and spent the day putting it in. They are . Love the color and the GPS mapping.

Fished the Cedar today from about 10:00am to 2:00 PM, one small smallie, that’s it. Lost a couple dollars in lures, but got to run the boat. Tried jigging minnows, finesse rigging worms. Nothing biting at all, not even the carp… I’ll be out again this PM here around Cedar Falls.

I was out here in CR yesterday morning (trying to) bass fish. Very slow, which surprised me. I thought with the warm temps and cloudy skies, the fish would be on a tear.

Three fish on buzzbaits, one on spinnerbait, two (biggest two) on a tiki-stick. Fed my last watermelon tiki stick to a hungry pike who cut the line on the way in, so decided to call it a day.

I talked to a guy who fishes the same spot as me and he and his brother got into some really nice whitebass and both filled thier stringers. He said they were all about 15″ and some 18″, they were using 6 pound test and had a few on that broke it. I’ve yet to get into a nice school like that this year. The waters dropping here in cedar rapids so when it clears up better maybe i’ll get lucky enough to get into them. Been catching a few smallies but none nice sized. Anybody heard anything about the wipers in Mcbride this year doing anything yet, i know last year they were doing good.

What’s the river like above Waverly and where do you put in? My boat isn’t too big, but it’s not a flat bottom by any means. I fish between the dams of CF and Waterloo a lot, but would make the drive to Waverly to try something new. Walleye and bass interest me the most. River looks good so I’m dying to try it. I’ve been on my annual trout trip so now it’s back to spinning reels and plastics.

bigesox- you say you fish the river between CF and Waterloo dams. What is that like? Do you have much luck there? Are you fishing backwaters or what? Where do you put in? Thanks in advance!!!

Oh, and i forgot to post my results from two nights on the Cedar. 0 fish…. I’ve been going out with a freind who is COMPLETELY new to fishing (at the age of 20!!!!), so trying to control the boat, and help him is the main concern. I have to learn the river better.

you can get pretty much any boat in the cedar above the dam in waverly they put dumb ski boats in there all the time but you need to know where you are going if you go upstream from the landing or you will be beached on a mud flat and stuck.

bigesox, from CF go to Waverly on 218. Come into Waverly past Wal-Mart and past the fairgrounds. You will come to Main Street (hwy 3) stop light, turn right, go 2 blocks to stop light, turn left and follow along the river, go over railroad tracks by Carnation, turn right at Waverly Power before you cross the bridge. There is the ramp. If you go down river, it gets deep at the first bend. It drops from 4 ft. to 13ft. Have caught alot of walleye and bass in the spring there. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I’ll have to try the Waverly area sometime. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the river up there both above and below the dam.

The river between CF and W’loo is pretty decent. Lots of rip rap shoreline with some deeper holes and not much speedboat traffic, that’s why I like it and it’s close to home. Lately I’ve been trolling the rip rap with crank baits, just get the bait ticking bottom and crawl up stream. Good luck. fished the cedar in waverly this morning and last night above the dam. The fishing was slow but the fish were there you just needed to be patient with them.

What kind of fish are we talking about? Eyes, Crappies, Bass? Glad to hear some people are having luck. I pulled people on a tube today on the cedar, does that count as trolling???

I think he was trying to get a suntan?
