Fished the Cedar in NW Black Hawk county today. No bites, cold, windy and rainy, better than a day in class/work. Did manage to spot one larger walleye with the aquaview. Tired mostly livebait on a jig. Didn’t get much fishing done due tomy unpreparedness to the cold and wind, and messing with my Aquaview. Will probably try it again Friday.

Thanks for the report. I hit a local hole for about half hour(all I had)with the same results. I was surprised the water didn’t look bad at all from the rain. How big of boat are you running up there?
March 10, 2006 at 1:35 am #428463fished the cedar by waverly last sunday managed two nice eyes and a 3 1/2 pound smallie. all got released. heading back to the cedar on saturday to try it again.
March 10, 2006 at 4:52 am #428529Man, i’m reading all these awesome posts about the Cedar on iowaoutdoors.org, and i didn’t catch a thing!
Honda75, i’m running a 22ft Warrior with a 225 Merc Verado on the rear, 15hp 4 stroke kicker, and full Lowrance GPS equipped sonar.
I WISH!!!
I’ve got a 12′ v-bottom with a 6hp johnson, pretty decked out for a 12′ boat. I run about 4″ deep in the water, so i can make it up the west fork/shell rock pretty far, plus i wear my waders so if i have to walk the boat, i can.

Congrats on the catch..if you don’t mind me asking- how deep were the walleyes, and the smallmouth?
Props on the release!March 11, 2006 at 5:49 pm #429019Fished the Cedar at Waverly this morning. There was a lot of debri coming down stram. Fished for 2 hours, “eyes” and “cats”, never had a bite. Talked to honda75 while I was there and he said the river had rose 3′ since yesterday. I’ll have to keep trying, it can only get better for me.
March 13, 2006 at 6:04 am #429398I tried again on Friday, no luck, not even a bite. My 6hp motor started running on one cylinder all of a sudden, and my aqua-veiw broke, and lost about $10 in jigs/lures. Not a good day for me…. I won’t give up though.
March 13, 2006 at 6:17 pm #429528took a look at the river this morning again. Still up and still dirty prob. be another good week before it goes down. Will keep everyone posted on here how the level is.
March 14, 2006 at 9:20 pm #429948Cedar is still rising as of noon Tuesday. I didn’t hear any good reports over the weekend. My own efforts yielded nothing on Saturday. Too nasty Sunday to try it. Fishing should only improve from here on out. Catch the DNR’s trout release on Saturday if you want a sure thing.
March 16, 2006 at 3:01 am #430510still the same level here as of 5pm tonight. If it is going down in nashua should be going down here soon as well. This weekend is looking good then so far.
March 16, 2006 at 4:17 pm #430621I went over the bridge here in W’loo and it didn’t look too bad. Hopefully the eyeballs will start to corporate.
March 17, 2006 at 2:41 pm #430953What trout release is that? Did they ever do the one thru the ice in C.F.?
March 17, 2006 at 6:56 pm #431059Steve,
That’s it, they never did one through the ice this year because the ice cover was too sketchy during January and February, so they’re letting them go in the open water now. I think I’m going to go in the morning before work.March 18, 2006 at 12:05 am #431140the cedar in waverly is back down to normal and is clear think i am heading out tomorrow.
March 19, 2006 at 1:30 pm #431331Fished the Cedar yesterday at Waverly and all we could come up with was 3 smallies.
March 20, 2006 at 5:00 pm #431584Trout release went pretty well considering it was the 4th scheduled date for it. I didn’t see too many limits taken home so most of the 1200 or so they put in should still be there this week.
The river looks pretty good today. Looks like it’s dropping some. That slow warming trend we’re supposed to get later this week should get them going by the weekend.
March 25, 2006 at 3:26 am #433207The eyes are biting like Crazy right now. Just wanted to brag a little. I stuck a 7 pounder a couple hours ago on a paddle tail at Waverly. And got quite a few 2-3 pounders and a ton of eater size and small males. Makes me almost not want to go to P4 tomorrow!
March 25, 2006 at 6:31 pm #433312Fished nashua yesterday after work. Wow did I hit the eyes great. Down from the dam a ways. Smallest was 13 inches biggest weighed in at 4 lbs. Released all of them also caught 2 saugers.
March 26, 2006 at 12:00 am #433362What did you catch the saugers on. I have been fishing Nashua for 8 years and have caught just about everything below the dam but a sauger. Were they decent sized or did they some how get mixed in with the stocked fish last fall. I also have been doing good here the last few days, I just like to try other places once in a while and sometime it pays off.
March 28, 2006 at 1:02 am #433775From what i was told the saugers were released in there by someone and from there they muiltiplied. I got them on a chart. power grub and a chart. ringworm. One on each along with the eyes were all caught on those two.
March 29, 2006 at 12:59 am #434042Some one probably brought them back from the Miss. I don’t beleive they have multiplied very much if at all though. You rarly here of any of them caught up here I’de say your pretty lucky to get one let alone two in one day.
April 10, 2006 at 2:26 am #437199Well I checked the river tonight and wow it came back up. yesterday it was down and pretty clear and thought maybe i should try it but went back by today and wow way up and super choclaty. Guess i will have to wait a few more days.
April 11, 2006 at 12:36 am #437424Checked the river again tonight and it was up even more from yesterday and still super dark. I will bet at least a week without rain before it will get back down to fishable conditions.
April 12, 2006 at 5:45 pm #437688Yeah, i have pretty much ruled out the cedar for fishing in the next couple weeks. Hopefully it drops quick, and clears up, but you know that won’t happen…
April 12, 2006 at 10:13 pm #437747As of today in waverly it has dropped about 4 to 5 feet but still up and kind of muddy. Still will be a week before i even think about fishing it.
April 13, 2006 at 4:37 pm #437908All the gates on the new Cedar Falls dam are wide open. Kayakers might have a good time on the river now, but fishing will be tough for the forseeable future. Hope those new mechanical gates can crush a snag full of logs because there are a bunch of trees stuck in the gates. It would be a terrible waste of half a million bucks if they can’t get the gates closed again.
April 13, 2006 at 11:32 pm #438058It’s almost fishable up here and has acualy cleaned up quite a bit. It won’t be long now!
April 14, 2006 at 10:22 am #438171I was going to hit it this morning down here, but seeing as how we got three inches of rain in less than an hour last night, I suppose I’m better off just going elsewhere.
Hopefully they didn’t get as much farther North.
