A buddy and I took my canoe down the Cannon from Cannon Falls to Welch this morning in search of smallies. The water is up a fair amount and there is a lot of current right now. Pretty muddy, too. How anyone can fish that stretch of the Cannon and not catch a single smallie is beyond me, but we did it. Ended up catching some walleye, sauger, northern, largemouth(including a 5 pounder!), and a 6 lb. channel cat(on a crankbait!). Anybody have any ideas on what to do to catch smallies when the river is under these conditions? We thought maybe with the high current, we’d find them holding in the pools, but that didn’t work.
