My friend Jerry and i was up river on the cedar last weekend fishing for crappies and got almost 2 dozen keepers. The biggest was 12 or 13 inches. They were all shallow in the back waters along stumps and deadfall. Some hit the minnow as soon as it hit the water and down the bobber went. We checked some of the water and it was around 4 to 5 feet and the crappies were all still in the first 2 feet of surface, must be there because of the warmer water. Got them in 12″ of water too! If the wind is down and the suns out this weekend i’ll bet they’ll hit again. Waters getting clearer too. Its time to hit the dam at anamosa for walleyes now.

Mossydan, haven’t seen you around here in 4-ever!

Were you around the CR area, or does “up on the river” mean somewhere North?

Hey Gianni, right in town up from the edgewood road bridge in the back waters just up from the bridge but keep it in your hat. Start early and use small minnows and set your hook for around 2 feet and go from there looking for anything where they might hold. Put in at mohawk or ellis park and go under the bridge and on your right just up from the bridge there a cut that goes way back in, Start there on the west side of the cut and fish it to the end then come back down on the other side, east side. You’ll get some. Later Gianni

Hey Rugbystar, I fish the wapsi for walleyes starting about now and open water all winter. I’ve found that on days when the walleyes weren’t doing anything I’d motor around and look for a real shallow little bend or pocket along the bank next to deeper water and the crappies would be in there suning themselves. Ive got them in shallow water as shallow as 1 ft. They would pull the bobber sideways thats how shallow they were, just water over thier backs is about all. The crappies are on the bite, Good luck

I think I know where you’re talking about, but I doubt there’s enough water in there to float my boat. The other place I would seriously consider is the North end of Coralville by the Greencastle bridge. That should be starting to stack up with walleyes about now.

I think it’s gonna be getting cold soon – I really should just winterize and call it good ’nuff. There’s deer that need a whacking, you know.

Mossydan, Right on! They were blasting it that day for sure. Good to know that should continue.
