Smallies and Walleyes…

Finally got a chance to get out this afternoon in the jonboat. I have not been on the river since April before the high waters began. The river is settling back down so I thought I would give it a try. The water was muddy today and current was up from last summer. Was able to catch several smallies however small 10 to 13 inches. To my suprise, I caught 2 walleyes over 15 inces today. This may not sound like much, but up here north of Charles City, keeper walleyes are hard to come by. All fish were caught on crankbaits. Smallies were relating to rocky current swept shorelines while the walleyes were caught off of a sandbar with a fair amount of current. Anyone fish the upper stretches of the cedar lately? OUT…

I had a good report on the no-kill stretch. Lots of good smallies. High water here in Cedar Falls as well. I guess that’s good for this time of year. We have lots of little walleyes in the river here. Several good classes are coming of age. You might be surprised how many walleyes you have in the river up there. Keep the reports coming.

Got out Sunday night, still to muddy for crankin’ down here, would probably be okay by today, but now the weather’s off. Did have one nice channel cat, probably 10# on a crawler in the brush.

    Hi there Captain Anchor,
I believe that I saw you there on Sunday. I was in the boat with a faulty trolling motor. We didn’t fair too well that day (5 smallies biggest 15″)but it is pretty hard to catch fish when your only means of boat control is a 3ft stick you retreived off the bank.
The week prior however I did pretty good below Charles City.
    I had 8 walleyes 15-19 inches and 3 smallies over 16 inches.
All the fish that day came on jigs (mostly 5″ k-grubs)fishing the back side of holes like the face of a wingdam.
I’ll probably try it again this weekend…I hope this cold weather doesn’t shut the fish down.

The walleyes have been hitting below Nashua this last week. Jig and minnow,k-grubs mainly. Bring the waders and fish the holes under the bridge. See ya out there.J.D.

    Hey Keith,

That was me in the jonboat. I haven’t checked this forum lately so sorry for the late response. I have a friend who lives below Charles City and he always has more luck with walleyes than the smallies. I am in smallie territory. I have done well with walleyes when I am able to get up and down the river. Most of the time I just wade, so the smallmouth bite is better for me. I was in the big boat on Lake Pepin this past weekend so no report from the Cedar. I will try to get out one night this week and fill you guys in. Hope your motor woes are over. Have you guys tried a small outboard? I am thinking about getting a 4 or 5 horse just to get me up and down a little better. OUT…

Current has stayed up below the dam in Nashua and the fishing has been good.I did well Tues. with a red wally diver. 6 fish over 18″ and a few smallies.Plain jig with a minnow was working but better size with the crank.6:30 to 8:30. Big mayfly hatch with the street lights being covered.Keep your mouth closed.Heading down there tonight. I have the silver Ranger.See ya out there.J.D.
