Anyone have any info on the level of the Cedar in the Vinton/LaPorte area? The Iowa is getting too low to navigate around here, just checking out my options. Thanks for any info.

The Vinton area would be a good choice if you have a shallow boat. The main channel would be ok even for a glass boat but the back waters in that area is what a jons for. The fishing should be ok because the fish are chasing minnows that are in shallow water around this area and should also be doing it up by Vinton. I think channels would be a good bet and crappies around the logs and brushpiles in the back waters. Any rocky shoreline should have smallies around it. I’ve heard some good reports from around this area as of lately. Navigation on the river should be good with a jonboat or smaller aluminum v-bottom.

Thanks for the info. I check the levels on rivergage.com, but that doesn’t tell me if I can get upstream in a boat. I’ve just got an old 1648 Monark jon with a 15 on it, so I can get thru some pretty skinny water. I know that once the reading on the Iowa at Tama gets below 9 it’s pretty tough going. If I get the time, I may have to slip up that way and try it. Haven’t fished up that way for a long, long time.

If you have that boat and can make it up river in a foot of water and it sounds like you can, then you’ll be ok and have alot of the river to yourself, especially the back waters, where the catfish are. Easy 2′ too 3′ ft. minimum everywhere on that stretch, just watch for submerged logs in new water, you’ll see the sand and gravel bars.

Thanks for all the info. I used to fish the Vinton/LaPorte area a bit, but it’s been years. Now, if I can just find some time?
