Story of my life

Pulled out onto the highway. Vehicle in the same lane was going a lot faster than they looked so I stepped on it so they didn’t have to hit their brakes. All off a sudden I heard a loud pop. At my next stop it seemed like my transmission was missing its first shift. Put it into reverse when I got home and nothing. frown

It has 204,000 miles. Need to decide if I’m fixing it or getting a different truck. Can’t really afford the truck I want right now. I’m either goimg to swap it out in the parking lot of my apartment building, bring it somewhere or get a different truck.

Oh man that sucks, I’ve been there before. I’ve bought trannys off Craigslist before from wrecked vehicles with success

It could be something simple. A lot of shops use Jasper replacement trannys. I would go to Jasper’s website, find a shop near you and have them look at it. A shop will be cheaper than you might think to change it. Most shops don’t have to pay core charges because of their volume. Plus, if something does go wrong with the tranny the shop will deal with Jasper on your behalf.

They are pretty reasonable to replace as far as transmissions go…
If you want I could quote the job out for you tomorrow. If anything it’ll give you an idea what you’re looking at. PM me if you’re interested, I’ll need a little more info about the truck.

I’d suggest spending the money on a used trans that comes with a warranty or a rebuilt.
Those are great trucks but that trans is a weak link. You did well getting 200,000 miles out of it. Buying one used without a history or warranty is a big gamble in my opinion.

I am not saying this is 100% for sure what happened, however… you may be in luck. I had a buddy whos truck did the same thing while passing a semi a few years ago. He took it in and wound up being a bracket that had rusted and broke. I did not even know modern transmissions had “kick down levers” anymore. But thats what his was. less than 200 bucks to fix. His truck is a bit older though. I would have someone take a look at it… On second thought, you said you were going to swap it out in you apartment parking lot… if you are able to that, you will be able to see if there is anything broken or missing form the outside of the case when you are under there! Might be simple as a little #9 wire and a good pliers!! HA!

I also can help if you want DT. I run an automotive shop in the north metro. Crappie is not far off what it would cost to get a rebuilt in there though, I would not consider a used one trust me it rarely works out with those, as mentioned it is the weak link. PM me if you would like. The fact that you have no reverse now after you felt the issue is 99% confirmation that the trans is shot. Sorry bud.

I put an ATK remanufactured tranny in my truck something like 2300 bucks . Did the job myself. One month later tranny crapped out again. Warranty was denied because it was not installed by a certified auto technician.

I totally thought you were going to say that it turned out you pulled out in front of an unmarked cop car and got pulled over… Awkward. doah

Bummer. Nothing sadder to a man than when good equipment dies. Been there before on the side of the road with that awful dead tranny feeling.

well if you wanna feel better about fixing, just start pricing out a new one.. i was mad at my truck had a bunch small things that needed fixing and thought about a new used one, then i priced out a new one and thought i can live with mine for awhile..pretty sure some guys have a truck payment more then my house payment!!

That’s why I’m leaning towards replacing the transmission. Just received a local quote for $3100. I might have to drive it a little longer to make it pay off bit better than a crazy monthly payment.

You could have it rebuilt. Im dont run a shop like others on here but no 2nd gear and no reverse sound like a broken reaction sun gear. Forty dollar part. Doesnt mean whole thing is junk. Pull it out and take it to a good tranny guy have him open it up and look.

Sorry man. Vehicle issues suck. Been there when everything seems to go to $hit all at once. On the bright side you got some good buddies on here that are willing to help you out! peace

All I can think of is 4L60E memes…

Bright side, they’re cheap and plentiful. I would sell you one I have, but it’s beat to HE11.They’re a dime a dozen and easy to swap yourself with a floor jack and patience. Become a youtube mechanic for a weekend and save thousands.

They are everywhere. And easy to replace. Not so much fun but not a terrible job at all.
