Stop sitting, start fishing

The general report I’ve been gearing out of Mille Lacs is that some have been doing really well while others have been getting skunked. I was able to fish Garrison bay off of the first break this last Tuesday and Wednesday. The fish I did land took some locating and diligence. Over the 2 days I landed 11 fish ranging from 17″-27″, I lost a couple at the hole and marked numerous more. I wouldn’t call this spectacular fishing but I think I fared better than most considering what I saw from other anglers.

Both days I am pretty sure I was the only person hole hoping and moving around. I noticed other anglers would set up shop at the first spot they came to and would end up packing up a few hours later (probably because they weren’t catching anything). This is not how you find/stay on top of fish! Wednesday was particularly slow and I had originally predicted a hot bite because of the incoming snow storm. However, when the snow started and the fish were nowhere to be found, anglers packed up and left the lake. Soon I was literally the only person out there. Fortunately, I stuck it out and landed 4 big fish right at sundown.

So my advice if you’re not having any luck out there: keep moving until you find the fish! Stay diligent and don’t call it a day just because you think you aren’t going to catch anything. The next spot you move to or bait/lure you use may be the difference.

Merry Christmas and Happy Fishing everyone!

Right on. That’s how I do it to. I rarely sit in my portable. Unless it’s below 10 degrees. There’ll be a lot of fishing in the house the next couple weeks though.

Nice fish and good advice. Some day if I get a flip over I will put it to good use. But with a hub its a pain to keep moving.

Thanks for the report Steve. All very true you have to stay moving to keep on those active fish, for the most part. We were up out of Garrison Saturday all day fished from Sun up till sun down and we landed 5. Weather was nasty and ill be the first to admit that I spent sometime in the warm shack but I did plenty of running around outside and that’s where I got into the best 2 fish for the day. A long skinny 29″er and a chunk of a 24″er. Nice to get out and put a few topside anyways!
