My son got a deer on the hunt of 2016 in November he went with my boyfriend and his brother and he got a 10 point buck when we got home my boyfriend and his brother went and brought it to the locker where his mother works we never see that year again because somebody else picked it up I know the taxidermist who mounted it and he knew that it was my sons year to Since then a mutual friend of me and my ex-boyfriend called me and asked me if I’d be home he had something for me and when I got home it was my sons deer on my doorstep like four months went by and the cops called me they told me I had to get that your bag because it’s the ownership of the person you pay the taxidermist what can I do I had to give the deer back

Man, that hurt to read. Anyone need a brain teaser?

You’ve given way too much information with not nearly enough punctuation for me to understand what you’re attempting to get at here.

    Best guess…
Her son shot a deer in 2016 that someone else picked up at the processing plant.
They took it to a taxidermist.
The taxidermist gave it back to the OP’s son because they knew it was his.

Police came 4 months later and wanted the mount because it belonged to the person that paid the taxidermist.

What can I do to keep my sons mount?

You will have to get the people from the locker plant and taxidermist to testify that it was your son’s deer.

Tell them no. They stole it in the first place. Inform them to file a claim in conciliation court. Force them to sort it out there. Possession is 9/10 of the law. At least that’s what I have heard.

It was professor plum, in the ballroom, with the candlestick. Case closed.

Doesn’t the tag follow that deer around?

Good point. The tag and registration number is required to follow the deer around. Weather at the butcher or taxidermist. It could of been replaced but it would have to be for a registered adult buck.

On the right track but here’s the rub. Doesn’t matter at all what’s true but what you can prove. Tag on the buck should connect the rightful owner.

A year later are there definitive records making that connection? Pictures that have the original shooter aka tag holder that also have a clear id on the tag info? What records does the butcher shop still have? just who brought it in? who brought it in + Tag numbers?

Next step, if you can indeed establish this chain then will the DNR give paperwork showing the son as the original tag holder?

You’ll need all that for chain of custody for any court case.

Here’s where it gets worse, even if you can do all this, win the case, and get the judgement, you may not get it back. Ask my fired realtor where my money is from trial last January flame

Second thought, are there emails or some other documentable chains that clearly shows that it was the son’s and he knew it. Better yet that plus emails/texts that show the boyfriend took it to the butcher shop.

Remember this is first about chain of custody. Has to be definitive proof it was the son’s first.

File a police report for stolen goods. Give them all the documentation and see if they’ll serve a warrant.

That’s how it works down here. And no taxidermist will take a cape or rack without the proper tag/permit.

his hands look pretty clean…. otherwise I would suggest an under the finger nail swab to prove ownership with DNA… looks like lots of DNA spread around… doah

The buck on the wall has a brown hair line on top of the snout, the buck in the field has an all gray snout?
And who in the heck would put babys breath around a mount.

Its tinsel garland. And if you look at each picture thee brow tine on the right as you view the deer in both pics has a very defined bend in it.

That dress out leaves something to be desired, no doubt. Where are the rear legs?

Dang you guys are hard core.

Although I have never gutted a deer, pretty much anyone can see it wasn’t done by an expert…might have been a first deer without the aid of a knowledgeable mentor? I don’t know I wasn’t there…but I think “Sportsmen” would help someone that’s obviously a newbie. No?
