I’ve been posting on the fishingminnesota.com forum for about a year, and every time someone asks there about musky fishing in the St. Louis, they get a big goose egg when it comes to answers. Guess that’s no surprise. But I’d like to find a few decent spots techniques that work here, so if anyone knows, shoot me an e-mail.

stfcatfish, I would be glad to talk to you re: St Louis muskies. Email me at [email protected]. I couldnt find your email address. It is a great musky fishery.

    Chris,
I moved to Cloquet a little over 2 years ago and have fished the St. Louis River/Spirit lake and bay areas for Muskies. So far no contact only small follows but I have caught numerous Smallies and Northerns.
I was wondering if you or anyone could share some insite on where a guy could start on the river for some Muskies either on the forum or privately (through e-mail). I’m not looking for a hot spot I just need a starting point. Just looking to have some good clean Catch & Release fun.
    Thanks much,

    Shayne,

I have bumped into a couple muskies over the years when I use to fish smallies right where the river opens up to Spirirt Lake and off the main channel in the shallow water grass island(s). One was a pretty nice fish around 46 inches if I remember correctly and the other was a smaller mid 30″ class fish. Both muskies came by accident fishing topwater for smallies in August and September. I know my brother has caught a few nice muskies in this area as well over the years.

    Hope this helps!
    Good luck

    Thanks Steve!
I appreciate your guidance on the river. There is a lot of river to cover and it can be a little intimidating to a new comer.

An excellent place to start looking for muskies on the St. Louis is up by Boy Scout landing. I have seen/caught fish within a 1/2 mile up or downstream from this area. Just hit the grassy banks esp the ones with the quickest drops into the river channel. I have caught muskies under the Oliver Bridge and down into both Pokegama bay and Allouez bay. Found a new spot this summer but wont let that one out of the bag yet!!
    Good Luck, Chris Beeksma

    Thanks Chris!
I have found that it has been difficult to obtain Muskie info in the bay. Thats why I’m interested. Thanks for helping me shortening my learning curve!
    God bless and good fishing!

I can give out 1 real good spot to the forum for where to catch Muskies on the St. Louis. Please release any you catch…or may a rock tear a hole in the bottom of your boat.
Right where Hiway 23 bridge crosses the river, there used to be a bar called Degiddios a.k.a Boondocks, the Stockade…whatever. Anyway, there is an island right out in the river there. Get on the south side of this island and work right where the currents begin to join as they wrap around the island, also work the channel between the bank off this bar and the island. I cannot tell you what lures to use as they can vary depending on the conditions usually topwaters like Globes and such.. I actually boated one caught on a piece of beef liver and a nightcrawler while fishing for channel cats one evening. What a riot that was…my buddy caught it.
Anyway, I have my best luck in there when it is very late ….around 9 p.m. to midnight.
See you guys on the Chippewa Flowage. Good luck.
