Schools of Walleyes have been on the move the past few weeks, no two days really come together the same way. I’m spending a little less time on each spot and spending a little more time graphing, you would hate to miss the mother-load by 100′. I like to mark large amounts of bait and fish on the sonar, especially when the Walleyes are not using cover. Most days we are fishing over fish the entire time. Typical for Leech Lake though, finding that first bite and then trying to maximize on these “happy fish” is key.

As far as presentations, a jig and spot-tail is still getting the majority of my bites but these minnows have been harder to get, and keep alive. Lindy rigs with leeches and crawlers are a really good option too. I had a strong spinner bite a week ago but have since abandoned this for slower presentations once roaming schools have been located.

Thanks Phil, a buddy and I will be up there in 8 days to see what damage we can do! If there are spot tails available, where would you look to buy them? Also, in general, where is a good bait shop up there? My first time to Leech.

Shriver’s “downtown” is great for bait and some info. For spot-tails and extra fresh live bait I go to Walker Bait co. 1 mile north of town. Good luck to ya JD!

Another option for spottails (depending on where you are…) is the Trading Post in Remer. Good family that runs it and to say they are generous on their “dozen” minnows would be an understatement…RR

Did that picture of your sonar come in Demo mode? I think that’s the only way I get mine to look like that grin

Seriously, thanks for posting the pics. My goal this year to get better at locating fish. Seeing other people’s notes and what it looks like really helps.

Haha, not demo mode. Those fish were suspended just off of the structure and at the same level. The S.I. saves time because you get a quick idea, in just one pass, that there are fish off to each side and not just right below. Starting at the top of the structure and working toward deeper water allowed us to keep our jigs at the right depth to get bites that day.
