Still Looking – Used ATV

The hunt is still on. I’ve been trying to find a 400-500cc atv to bomb around on that’s small enough to throw in the pickup and fit down some of our smaller bluff trails. We also employ a high school kid to handle some maintenance things around the property and odd chores that’d use it too. If any IDO’ers have a lead or are looking to sell, let me know. The Facebook Marketplace game isn’t really my forte. I know most of the postings on there that have decent stuff priced appropriately sell instantly, and I don’t have time to sift through it all day.

Ideally I’d love to find a Honda Rancher, Foreman, Yamaha Kodiak, or Yamaha Big Bear in the 2500-4k range…but will broaden my search if needed. Anything more expensive than that and I’d just go buy new with a warranty in Spring.

I literally looked at the link, reached out via message, asked for a cell number. When I got it and called I was third in line. It was probably 40 minutes after it was shared here.

    The hunt continues. smash

The hunt wouldn’t be to hard if you looked. I come by a ton of them for the 3 to 4k mark. 2500 isn’t realistic, if you really wanted one you’d be able to find one.

That machine had electric thumb shift. Be glad it sold. And almost 4k miles.

So I am curious.. how many miles do you think a 22 year old ATV should have on it ? Also, after 4000 miles, is the electric thumb shift really an issue ? crazy

Last week I took out my 2012 Suzuki King Quad 500 and put on approx. 30 miles. That pushed the odometer just over 300 miles. Not 22 years old but…

Live in south metro. This area is not friendly for trails like up north. I also have a 2008 Suzuki King Quad with out looking that has less than 500 miles on it. This one I have used mainly for snow plowing.

I have been planning on selling the King Quad 500 since I purchased a SxS but just have not gotten around to it. Now 2 years later…. It has power steering, never seen hard work like plowing and never has been in mud. For me, anything less than $5000 does not seem worth selling.

A brand new one can be bought for 7. So to get a 02 that’s at 4k miles and has the worst shifter in Honda history for 3 or 3500 isnt a wise choice. At least for me.
    (Edit)
I should have put a stupid face at the end of my statement just for you.

You tell a guy he really doesn’t want a used ATV, he is making it up ?

You think 4000 miles on a 22 year old ATV is a lot of miles ?

You act/sound like an azzhole and in another thread, make a comment about people who don’t post daily anymore… keep up your quest. BTW.. where are the new 500 Rubicons for $7k ?

No pompous azz emoji for me to use just for you.

Sorry, didn’t mean to start a controversy…rather just take advantage of a lot of minds who probably sift Marketplace and see more “toys” for sale than the average Joe here through IDO.

    Let’s all be friends.

Barring a complete issue that the guy is hiding… I’m taking some ramps when I go to look at a 2006 Kodiak 450 with 1400 miles for $2600 after I get some work done here today.

No not a Rubicon. And I’m not saying 4k is alot on a 22 yr old machine. But it is alot for a 22 yr old machine for that price. Sorry your so worked up.

I don’t know why anyone else posts.. after Bearcat89 does… what he says is the best info you can get. Your little barbs you like to throw in and then act like your innocent are gold. You said he doesn’t want an ATV.. you throw shade at an obvious deal as many were in line to buy, pointing out the miles and shifter and then add a barb about a stupid face to me. I am not worked up, someday I will also abandon IDO and then you can throw jabs at yourself.

If Bearcat89 has blessed the Kodiak sight unseen… best get it.

The same guy has a 2003 with 1100 miles for the same price. The ’03 does have a winch and detachable tall windshield while the ’06 does not have either. I don’t think Yamaha changed much in those 3 years so I might go with the ’03

Bucky, do either of them have independent rear suspension? That was just getting added to those models around that time. That IFS is a nice upgrade on those machines. Only downside would be if you plan to tow a trailer with much tongue weight.

^I’ll have to check. Thanks for the heads up

Edit – You nailed it. Looks like the ’06 has independent and the ’03 is a solid rear axle

The 03 will be a solid axle and the 06 should be independent. In 04 they added a reverse override which is nice if you run bigger tires or try backing up heavier trailers. I have an 03 Kodiak 450 and love it. It doesn’t ride the nicest but it has never let me down and for a work machine is great. I also used to plow with mine.

Edit: Yamaha runs a wet(oil) air filter so when you look at them make sure it’s not dry. They are easy to get at under the seat. If the air filter isn’t maintained properly it can allow dirt into the top of the engine and that’s the main cause for top end rebuilds at least that’s what I was told by an ATV mechanic.

IMO, the best time to shop for ATVs is from November 1 onwards. This is when a lot of guys are getting nagged about all that crap he has that never gets used and is blocking the winter use of one of the garage stalls. This is when the deals are there if you’re looking. It’s basically the same as boats, when guys are looking at storing stuff for another winter, they can get motivated.

Big fan of shaft driven foot shifts vs the belt driven clutch style or button shift . Then again maybe that’s from all teen abuse years of sinking them in waterholes . My ranchers a 16 and has 900 miles . A true garage queen but for the money I just can’t let her go .

The majority of Hondas elec shift issues came from riders who drove them in deep water/mud.
    Shorted out shift solenoids.

Not specifically water/mud holes. Wet conditions period. Being in rain, snow, wet trails, trailering in the rain. Also known as hondas one bad design flaw. I’ve fixed many of these in my days. Flipping wheelers was my side income for many years. I still do if I find the right deals.
