i have a ms 170 that i took to the repair shop. they said the carb needs replacement as well as the bar oil pump? he said the cost to replace and labor, parts would almost be the cost of a new saw? said the carb is non adjustable and was running lean. thoughts on whether i can replace parts as a handy person or not worth it? curious to get opinions. thanks. walt

Most definitely. Plenty of information on YouTube for both and parts should be readily available.

knockoff carb and oil pump on Amazon are $16 and $8.
I’ve used these knockoffs as a whole and also parts and they have been good for me. Easy jobs to replace those parts.

Yes it’s worth it factory parts are not much more than knockoff oiller about 15 bucks spend the extra 9 and get the adjustable proline carburetor factory proline is not adjustable but they make a direct replacement that is adjustable it is what I run on mine and it runs way better all around. I bought mine from sawzilla but would guess there are other places that may be cheaper.

Absolutely worth repairing and both the carb and the oil pump are easily within the skill set of most DIYers.

IMO you can’t judge a carb or many parts these days based only on brand or where they are made. The Stihl OEM is made in China. I replaced many small engine parts with aftermarket parts and the markings and look of the parts are exactly the same OEM versus aftermarket. But by all means get an adjustable version of the carb.

If you happen to be in the east metro or nearby and need help, we can do the repairs in my shop and then tune the saw. Bring your chains, I have a sharpener.

I just did this with a MS 180. I got the parts through Sawzilla. Lots of how to’s on Youtube.
