Sticky bench rest cradles

How many have gone to the range on a warm day to shoot some paper only to have the gun’s accuracy questionable because the stock or barrel sticks to the material inside the rest or cradle. Believe it or not, accuracy can suffer if either are sticking or sticky when the shot is fired. It has to do with the harmonics of the barrel pulling the rest or cradle along instead of allowing the barrel or stock to slip thru it during the recoil phase. Get a half-yard of satin, any color will work, and when you have the rest or cradle adjusted to where you want it lay the material, slick side up, on the rest/cradle then shoot. You’ll find the gun slips with the recoil very well and the cradle won’t move much if at all.

Some people cover both the cradle and the rear stock rest, some just the forward rest or cradle. Bottom line….it works to get the most out of the guns inherent accuracy. Try it the next trip out. Cut the half yard in half so both forward and rear rests can be covered at once. Just hold onto the gun because this stuff is slick!

I was watching one of the shows on tv about sighting a rifle in and I seen they had a bottle of baby powder on the bench with them. Maybe they were using the powder to make the cradle smooth. Maybe! I did not heard them say anything about the powder.

That’s what the powder was for Gary. The cloth is much less messy.
