Were those targets rated for centerfire rifle?
In general, steel targets don’t last very long, even when I’ve stuck to the caliber rating. My .22 RF targets have to be hammered flat about every other use. The soft steel “cups” after repeated hits.
I’ve never had issues of blowing through centerfire-rated targets. I have cracked chunks out of the edges with hits very close to the edge, but nothing like you did.
Oh, and then there was that situation with dad shooting a pistol target with a a .22-250. At 25 yards. That didn’t go well. I now paint my targets according to caliber ratings. If it ain’t white, don’t shoot it with a centerfire.
