Really because you want a haircut is a good reason to put people at risk ? Either your with science or your not .

I think you got a red herring and straw man in the same paragraph.

Simple math… the unconfirmed cases of death in MN = 615 (591 confirmed)

There are 5,640,000 people in Minnesota

    615/5,640,000 = .000109

615 deaths, 81% in long term healthcare (nursing home, hospital, not going home) = 498 deaths. 615-498 = 117 deaths of people not in long term healthcare.

117/5,640,000 = .0000207% of dying from Covid for the average person.

    I will take my chances.

That is simple math, incorrect, but simple. I agree with you that the data we do have shows it is not a significant threat to young healthy people, but that is simply not how you calculate the mortality rate. The accurate way based off of current data is # who died because of Covid/# infected. And to get the most accurate way we will need significant randomized serological tests to see what percentage of the population has or had it and use that as the denominator against people who died because of covid. There was a Stanford study published about a month ago that did this and the mortality rate is similar to the flu, but with much more significant side effects for survivors. It is serious. Suiciding our economy and peoples livelihoods is also very serious. So I agree with most that we need to open up, continue to be careful, and like James I can’t wait to go out to eat for a week or two straight once we can jester

What is “incorrect” about it ? So your basis is, if you do not contract Covid, you are not at risk of it ? Got it.

I drove across the river for a couple beers last night with some friends to say that we “did it”. The line was out the door at 2 local establishments by 8:00pm. People of all ages and ranges from families (yes families with kids), to a few gentlemen in the corner that had to be over 80. I’m still not sure what to think of it, other than if one person in that place had the virus there’s easily 80+ people who are now exposed and another 60+ with intense hangovers today. We ordered our beers and stood outside and people watched as they flocked in. There was a steady stream of cars with MN plates making the trip with us. There’s 0 chance any guidelines about social distancing or sanitizing will be enforced ever again in WI after last night’s ruling and the ensuing crowds.

First the TP hoarders now the most pressing thing is a stupid haircut? Buy clippers, it takes 5 minutes and pays for itself in 2 minutes.

If a guy enjoys the simple pleasure of getting his hair cut by whoever, who are you or me to judge him on that. Lighten up a little bud.

Using your math the USA mortality rate for Covid-19 was 0% in January, and will be a sliding scale until we have our last Covid-19 related death. The actual Mortality rate is a calculation of how many people who get it, die and shouldn’t fluctuate much once we have sufficient good data and population studies. Calculating it against the entire population is an incorrect calculation, it needs to be calculated against the # of people who got it, it’s an important distinction if you want to be accurate. And yes if you never get Covid (or any malady like a heartattack aneurysm etc.) you won’t die from it. Same reason why the Flu mortality rate is calculated off of people who actually had the flu vs how many died from it. It’s not controversial or partisan, its just how these things are calculated.

Big G, you either need to get rid of the percentage sign or move the decimal a couple spots.

But yes, still an extremely low number

    .00207%

Agree the formula would equal .O0207%, not .0000207%. Also the formula appears to be using the incorrect denominator. Total population was stated as 5,640,000, need to subtract those living in long term care from the 5,640,000 before dividing.

    What’s the alternative??

Stay shut down forever?? A complete economic collapse?? Live off the land while sheltering in place for the next decade??

    Remember, there is no cure.

The SIP was needed to flatten the curve and build up supplies.

It’s past time to reopen, but feel free to continue the SIP if you’d like. It’s your choice.

When all this is done our national debt will be astronomical in size.

Yes, but this pandemic put things into overdrive.

The $600 weekly bonus unemployment money won’t even burn because the ink is so wet.

Not arguing that it isn’t accelerating. People seemed to be fine with the rising deficit for the last three years though, just find it funny

It really started ramping up in the fall of 2008. I don’t know if that would happen to correlate with anything or not? ;)

Debt, schmebt. Most countries have debt. Even China has debt. I’ll worry when the US loses it’s AAA credit rating.

The budget has not been balanced since William Jefferson Clinton was President. Noted liberal [sic] Alan Greenspan stated “I think Bill Clinton was the best Republican president we’ve had in a while.”

Wonder if I can make a reservation at my favorite bar for June 1?

As I left the house this morning headed for work the last thing the wife said was she was going to call a couple of our favorite restaurants to see when we can start making reservations. My hope is that at 6 PM on June 1 I’m sitting at one of our favorite tables at one of our favorite eateries with drinks and apps on order headed our way! One of the things I’ve missed the most during the shutdown is dinner night out with the wife. waytogo

Exactly James !!! I retired as of March 1st and haven’t had the chance to enjoy ONE DAMN DAY of it yet. This world has become so full of bs that you can’t believe anything anymore. I pity the younger generations cause this world is headed down the crapper fast.

Thanks, kitten. However, if you are going to be that condescending you should learn the difference between deficit and debt. Otherwise you might end up looking really dumb. The deficit increased after the last recession and then increased again while the economy was good, not sure if that correlated with anything.

Anthony Fauci is in fact the director of the NIH which is a federal agency. Having stock, investments, or other financial benefits from a vaccine study by a private company would in fact be highly illegal and I can assure you they watch him closely. That would be a serious conflict of interest. Any agency that regulates a specific commodity is prohibited from having financial assets in them. So a USDA employee can’t have stock or other financial investments in Tyson meats or Smithfield Foods, just as an example.

And mind boggling to me that it currently is a banned activity until May 18. Or at least the overnight stay part is banned. I personally can’t think of a place where I’m more safe from Covid.

James, the reason the Boundary Waters is closed to overnight camping is because the US Forestry Service is working with a skeleton crew right now and any forest fires that start will not be able to be attended to with such minimal staff. I have a friend who works for the Forestry Service. He also said that they don’t want to go against what Governor Walz is doing too, which is why camping there was closed until he lifted the Stay At Home Order.

I agree that a wilderness in northern MN is about the safest place to be and steer clear of other people, I don’t think anyone would argue that.
