Saw this article today on MN giving 1k+ acres back to the Upper Sioux Tribe. Could this set the precedent and Upper Red be next?

Definitely gonna give traction for the tribes to get “there” land back. Is this the same park that was full of burial mounds? I read sometime ago that the tribe was trying to get back their burial mounds, but didn’t think it was that much land. With the amount of lobbying power the tribes have now this is just the start. Imo

Yep, well put.
Do you expect anything to change with a democratic house, senate, Governor, and a Native American Lt. Governor? Wake up Minnesota.
I have been to the Upper Souix Agency State Park. There is plenty of history there and along that whole area. The campground there had 3 tee pees that you could rent and stay overnight in.
Most of the soldiers that served in that area (1860s) were immigrant men looking for a place to live and some meals. Most Minnesotans choosing to serve in the military (at that same time) where off somewhere else fighting the Civil War.
I cannot leave this state fast enough. Truly a sad day for MN to lose that park.
I heard about this seems like half a year ago on Outdoor news radio. I’m not mad that the land went back to the tribe, but more disappointed that the issue as I recall was brought up very quickly with a very short or maybe none at all period of open comment or debate from the public. This reminds me of the tribe from Treasure Island wanting to purchase a large amount of land near Lakeland right off I-94. Some people from the township wanted the tribe to sign an agreement that if the land was purchased there would never be a casino built there. Of course the tribe was offended by this as they wanted the land for tribal housing. They refused to sign the “no casino” document.
Just remember our “leaders” in Minnesota are the same people who changed our flag.
Welcome to Somali….uh I mean Minnesota
The Illinois town of Shabbona is named for a long dead Indian chief and home to Shabbona Lake State Park. The Pottowanomi tribe out of Kansas claims successorship to the dead chief and claims they own most of the land of the park and surrounding area. They really don’t want the land. They want to build a casino about ten miles away but don’t want to pay for it. There is support among Democratic state legislators to give them the money.
Give the whole state back to the tribes. Could they really do any worse than our current leaders?

I bet we are looking at a money laundering scheme and kickbacks.
give them there lakes and land within. BUT they stay within those boundries…..no leaving. they pay for healthcare, roads, grow there own food… make there own electricity, gas………….
but that’ll never happen!!!

My thoughts too. The land will be trashed just like the reservations are.
Those who enjoy fishing the sliver of URL should be sure to get their fill of outings ASAP. I just don’t see that NOT becoming a battleground for control in the very near future

We have driven thru some reservations out west. Not unusual to see a house with no windows but huge satellite dish next to house.
The last bit of URL is going to be on the docket soon. Once the legal precedent has been set or unchallenged, it will be ripe for the picking.
As long as we all only complain on here, instead of calling our cowardly politicians, who are funded by the tribes, nothing will ever get done. No balls walz even picked one for lieutenant governor, vote for somebody else.

Last time I contacted them, both of my reps emailed back and said basically to buckle up and enjoy the ride because the DFL trifecta is running the show and any dissenting opinions are laughed at and thrown to the side.

URL- And do not forget about the extra 1 mile around the perimeter that they are asking for.
So to recap, we have, at varying stages, Upper Sioux Agency State Park (1400 acres, U of MN Cloquet Forestry Center (3400 acres), White Earth State Forest (155,000 acres), Red Lake and surrounding area (48,000 acres of lake, and 84,105 acres of woodland/towns). So a total of 291,905 acres. Is that right? Am I missing any?

FYI Here’s the email I sent to all of my reps (State and Federal), along with Walz and DNR Commish Strommen. You can look up your reps at this link, then just google their email, some will be forms to fill out, others will have an actual email.

Dear NAME,
I am very concerned about the trajectory of our state, as supposed leaders here are giving away our (everyone in MN) land. We currently have, at varying stages of donation, Upper Sioux Agency State Park (1400 acres, U of MN Cloquet Forestry Center (3400 acres), White Earth State Forest (155,000 acres), Red Lake and surrounding area (48,000 acres of lake, and 84,105 acres of woodland/towns). So a total of 291,905 acres set to be given back to the tribes, that is just the starting point, and for what? And what access will every American of every race, creed and belief have after these transfers? Little to none, if we look to how they are handled currently. Please step up and do something to stop this theft of EVERYONE’S land. Or if you believe this is the right move, please lead from the front and donate you and your families land back to the tribe you believe it was stolen from.
Thanks,
NAME
I like it. I already sent a brief not so eloquent msg to all my reps yesterday. All of my reps are woman.. I just sent your version to the gov. Thanks. Even though it will have no effect on those commie $&#%$ers,
Well as an out of stater that always looks to vacation or travel to a spot to fish or hunt. I’ve never been to a place owned by a reservation. And I won’t. Is this beneficial to them? Does the state lose all tax revenue from this? How about local city and county taxes? How is that going to affect local businesses, property owners, and homeowners? Good luck.
