Does anyone use starlink? how has it been working for you? I’ve lived without internet at my house since I bought it 6 years ago (no internet providers to my location other than satellite internet). I’m thinking about finally pulling the trigger on starlink. Looking to hear any first hand reviews from rural MN users.

Are they the same as Hughes? Last I heard Hughes was very slow, like the dial up speed of 20+ years ago. Might be a different company.

I thought it was high priced. It will cost about $680 to have the equipment sent and $110/month for service but they say they are at capacity in my area and it might be 2023 before I could get service.

I have been using cellular data since I quit hughes net back in 2007. Right now I am using AT&T prepaid on a hotspot that costs $25/month with a 20GB/month data limit and my phone has a 100GB hotspot limit that I stream TV on

Starlink is part of Elon Musk’s SpaceX company and it should be faster than other satellite service because the sats use a low earth orbit. You can actually see them when they are deployed at night. https://www.nbc15.com/2022/04/22/photos-starlink-satellites-soar-over-wisconsin-sky/

Not at all the same. Hughes and Viasat are traditional satellite and suck. Main difference with Starlink is low orbit satellites so there isn’t the terrible latency.

Someone with a beta unit brought it to my work for some testing last year and it’s pretty amazing. We weren’t in an official coverage area and there were occasional outages but when it was connected it was generally 50-80Mbps download and latency was 30-50ms most of the time. If you don’t think someone is running cable/fiber to your house anytime soon it’s really the only good option.

Most people claim to get north of 100 mbps download which would be better than centurylink in the Duluth area.

I should also clarify. I’m aware of the initial equipment cost as well as the $110/month cost. It’d be less than what I’m currently paying for directv so I’d consider it a wash on that front. More interested in hearing any experiences. Looks like I could get it immediately at my house and the 2nd gen square dishy is supposed to be a step up from the beta circular dish.

I also have unlimited data on my phone thru Verizon but the hotspot is limited at 15 GB per month. So once I removed the extra $15/month for the ability to hotspot and my directv, starlink would be cheaper on a monthly basis. Not exactly apples to apples but only reason I have directv is so I can watch something other than the couple channels you get thru the antenna for free.

No knowledge on this at all but they are pretty cool to see at night. Like a train of stars moving across the sky.

Disclaimer: Im not the guy paying for it.

But I set it up at my families cabin on Vermilion, it was easy and quick for them to send the equipment and even easier to set up. The connection/speed is excellent and if I ever need to reconfigure my current set up I will be going thru Starlink. This was 6 months ago and I was not aware of any waitlist. This is also in an area where no provider has (good) service. I have only good things to say thru my experience, but again, it wasn’t my wallet.

Have it and love it. Just make sure you have a good north facing view for it.

Neighbors have it, some other people on vermilion have it as well. No complaints.

I use one for work – it is in my Job trailer. Its fast easy and reliable, plus way less money than brining in a temp line.

Why is Starlink internet faster if the satellites are in a LEO?

Geostationary orbit is ~22,200 miles away so just because of the speed of light there is a terrible delay. Starlink satellites around 350 miles up. Since it’s not geostationary though they need a huge amount of orbiting satellites to maintain coverage.

Ive had it since 12/18/2020 and love it!!!! My cost was around 580 for equipment and 99 a month. It just recently went up in equipment and monthly cost. I’m not the satellite expert but this one points north instead of south. There are plenty of YouTube vids about this and why its better.

It takes minutes to set up unless you are mounting in a tough area. Set up network on phone and bam, your done. Dish is heated for winter weather. I can have 3 kids 2 adults on phones while streaming whatever I want. I worked from home with teams meetings all day and never had a problem. The do some updating hear and there but never takes very long.

It gets my approval. Message me if you have any questions.

thank you! these are the exact type of first hand experiences I was looking to get by posting on here. Do you by chance know what your download/upload speed averages?

For anyone that is in the rural areas it is the best option. Better than traditional satellite as weather I don’t interrupts the service. We are on the waitlist and have friends that have it and love it compared to our other options.

It is hard to get though but I hear they are launching more satellites in near future. Coolest thing is that if you mount it to like an RV or boat you get internet everywhere if you ever needed that for some reason. I think that in the future you will be able to take it with you like a chrome stick or firestick and use on vacations anywhere you go.
