Good morning all, I’m looking at getting a stainless prop for my 2014 Merc 150 Fourstroke. The boat is a 1875 Lund Impact. I’m looking to get a bit more top end than the 44mph I’m getting now. Any suggestions?

What prop do you have on there now? What are your RPMs at wide-open throttle?

I’m not 100% sure on the current prop, standard aluminum 3 blasé that came with the purchase. I would say I’m at about 5200-5300 RPM? I may be wrong, just going off the dash RPM gauge which isn’t exactly always accurate.

Seen a lot of suggestions for a Mercury Tempest Plus at 19p for that rig. Does boat have SmartCraft gauges?

First, I would highly suggest you go to Mercury’s Website and use their prop selector just to get a feel.

That being said, I am in the same boat as my very reliable Optimax for 11+ seasons abruptly gave up the ghost at 6:18 AM Memorial day weekend and I was forced to repower.

Here are some thoughts for what others are using or is being suggested by Mercury. What works best for you will depend on the weight of your boat, and what you want from your prop. Max RPM / handling … keeping in mind your max RPM is 5800.

Tempest Plus 19 – seems to be most popular, perhaps many come with it
    Rev 4
    High Five 21

I have kept my High 5 for now, and will be heading out to start break in shortly.

At 5300rmp the prop you have now is to big, you should be real close to 5800 rpm at WOT and trimmed up. When you re prop with the right one you will have a big grin on your face when you notice the difference mostly in the hole shot.

The boat would normally run either a 17(heavy load) or 19(light load) depending on load. I show that it ran in the upper 40’s on a old Mercury Boat House Bulletin. Before you go and order a prop I would confirm what’s on it now, and your true RPM’s trimmed out at best speed.

Fair warning it can be a bit deceiving because you will almost for sure be able to trim the engine more with stainless. Sometimes they have to go lower in pitch with aluminum to get RPM’s up with the reduced trim angle. Traditionally you would go lower with stainless over aluminum… not always the case!

Just back from a few hours breaking in my new 150. Yikes, very responsive, very quiet, and she just want to go …… Can definitely tell the higher gear ratio.

I had no problem hitting 5800 with my High Five 21. That has been a great prop for my heavy Ranger 617, but I might need to find something different now.
