For being a captain of the nephews bass league I get 5 rods at 50 percent off. Looking for 2 bass rods, maybe 2 new walleye rods and a musky rod. What do you guys suggest? I do have a avid x I really dislike right now, debating on going tournament series for jig pitching. Just not sure what the best jig rods are and then what bass rods

I’ve got 2 mojo bass rods, 2 premier (discontinued) rods, 1 mojo muskie rod, and 1 bass x rod.

The mojo are slightly better than the premiers and the premier is better than the bass x. I wouldn’t suggest the bass x line.

I like the mojo versions, they come with a 5 year warranty. I believe if you bump up to the elite or tournament series you get a lifetime warranty, so that is something to keep in mind.

I can’t specifically help you with a jig rod.

The muskie mojo rod I have it an 8 foot heavy fast action paired with a Shimano Calcutta D reel that I use for moving lures like spinnerbaits, in-line bucktails, topwater, and crank baits. I would recommend this rod. The one I have has a split cork handle but I see now they come with rubber/synthetic handles.

For the bass I’d go with either the Legend tourney bass or the Avid series. With the 50% off the Legend Tourney should be around 145.00-150.00. For a all purpose spinning rods I’d go with 7’3 in either the MHF or in the MXF depending on how fast of a action you like to fish. Of the two I’d say the MHF would be more versatile. The MXF would work better for more finesse tactics. In a Baitcaster I’d go with the 7’3 MHF as well. Great all-around rod. If you do any flipping I’d get the 7″4 Heavy fast.
I’m not a big fan of the Mojo series in the Bass rods. I have broken 2 of them while boat flipping bass and neither bass was overly big. They replaced both of them no problem. When I spoke with the warranty person he said ” Let me guess you were boat flipping a fish when it broke ” I said yes. He said don’t boat flip any bass over 2 Lbs with those Mojo’s. I told him I have a 20 year old plus Tourney series that I have boat flipped Hundreds if not a thousand bass over 2 Lbs. He said yep. Far different quality between the two.

That said about the Mojo bass series – I love the Mojo Muskie series. I think it is one of the best value Muskie rods out there.

I have a bunch of premier’s that I really like for the price. A 5’6″ medium fast is my favorite for jigs, although I don’t do a lot of pitching, more vertical/45 degree. And a 7’6″ medium light fast that I use when pitching, but usually have it lined up for bobber fishing. If I had that offer, I’d probably look at adding a fly rod to my lineup too.

    or the Avid series.

Perhaps I am mistaken but I am pretty sure the Avid line has been discontinued and replaced with the Legacy.

That may be. I have not looked at any St. Croix for awhile now.

I was offered 5 at 40% off for being a Captain. I have so many rods I am not sure if I will take advantage of the offer. If it was on just the blanks I would be all over it. The cool thing with these rods, St. Croix will put your name on it. This is done to discourage people from taking advantage of the offer to resell the rod. If I do take advantage of the offer I would be looking at the Legend Elite or Legend Tournament line. Legend Tournament being a better value because what they charge for the upgraded guides in the Elite is a bit steep. I am not a big fan of the handles in the muskie line or I would recommend The Jerk. This is a great blank. I have an older, modified version of this rod and use it every time I go after muskies. The panfish Elite are very nice.

I will most likely go with the legend tournament series and I definitely forgot I need a new panfish rod . I get to overwhelmed looking at 100 rods on line. Wish I could buy them in person.

Go to the store and try them out. Write down the model number and order it.

This is what I would do. Locating a place with a good supply of Saint Croix rods right about now may be a challenge right about now. Lots of store supplies of rods is getting low at this point in the season.

Handle in store, IMO the tourneys are quite tip heavy for being an expensive rod.

Panfish series would be sweet at that discount.

Back when we used to book a guide up on Eagle Lake, ON he did all his walleye jigging and musky fishing with Legend Elite rods that had been gifted to him. I tried his out and they made my Triumph series jig rod and Mojo musky rod feel like a pool cue. If I were getting 50% off I’d definitely go that route.

I have tried all of the makes of St. Croix rods, and I can say that often times, when I bought a Legend Tournament, I kind of ended up regretting not just getting the Avid. Especially now, with the new Avid lineup, I don’t think the tournament carries much on it, not for the cost. Otherwise, I would go with the Legend Elite, there you will notice an upgrade in performance.

I have a Mojo Bass, 2 Legend tournaments that I really like and a panfish rod.
Don’t know the specifics on the panfish one but it is a little less than 5′ and fun as hell. A small Pflueger President on it I switch out and use ice fishing in the winter. Just caught a bunch of crap[pies this morning on it.

I have both the legend tournament and different versions of the elite. The elite is significantly better. You are making a lifetime purchase with elite rods. The upgrade between 2 tournaments and 2 elite would cost you in the area an extra $175 with the 50% off. Over 30 years of fishing that’s not much. Get a medium and medium light in your preferred length from 6’10” to 7.5′ and you are set. It’s not my money but that’s how I would go

I’d be after a 9 ft XH Musky Rod. Something that can throw pounders half way across Mille Lacs. -)

I’ve never been a big fan of St Croix’s bass rods. They are all heavy and bulky. If it was me, I’d pick up a couple spinning setups that you can use for bass and walleye techniques.

A 6’8″ M XF is one fantastic rod, spinning or casting across most rod models. In the Legend Extreme, the M is more of an ML to me.

Well I started out by ordering 2 elite panfish rods. 7ft ul, and 7ft light fast. Just because I would never pay full price for those.

Leads me to ask, what musky rod would double as a good flat head rod. I don’t do enough of each to justify big money on 2 separate rods.

Just curious, What brand of rods are you fishing that make a quality St Croix rod feel Heavy and bulky? I have tried a few rods that have weighed less but they were not real durable and the warranty would not cover the breakage. If there is something that weighs less, is as durable with a good warranty and in the same price point I’d like to give them a try.

For Flathead fishing, I have the St. Croix Premier Musky 8’ H fast action. Mine is made with a combo of SC1 graphite and fiberglass, was told when they ended their old catfish rod, the blanks were the ones from the old catfish models. They work great for Flathead fishing.
