Buying a St. Croix Rod. Do most of you prefer the medium power or the medium light?

I’m looking at the Premier Series Spinning Rod 6’6″ Fast action.
Looking to spend between $100-$175 so open to other suggestions as well.

Mostly will be used for jigging with a minnow. Or just using leach and slip bobber. Occasionally troll but I can use a different pole for trolling.

Croix S66MLF taper can do just about anything walleye related.

Find a store where you can handle a Triumph, Premier, Eyecon, and Avid and pick which one feels best in the hand.

My vote would be 6′-6″ or 6′-9″ medium-light, extra fast action. Great all around setup for jigging and rigging.

I prefer the medium light. St croix has a firmer medium light than most brands. I actually do almost all my fishing with a Premier ML. A 6’ for panfish and walleye and a 6.6’ for walleye and bass. Even though they are both ML, the 6.6 has much more backbone. I can cast farther too with a ML.

My favorite all around walleye rod is the 7′ ML St.Croix Eyecon.
Incredible feel, good tip, with a lot of backbone. For $140 it would be hard to beat.

No right or wrong answer. MF is the swiss army knife of actions, everything including cranks just not great at jigging. MLF I like better for jigs and lighter rigs. If only jigs then MLXF.

For reference I’m a Croix fan and have the following:
Premier 6′ MF, should be 6’6 but I bought it for canoe
Avid 6’3 MLXF, really shines at vertical jigging. for jig and plastic 6’9 woudl be better
Tournament 6’6 MLF, technically dads but accidentally borrow. awesome for live bait rigs 1/4oz or maybe 3/8oz

Definitely ml. My 7′ medium st croix is too stiff for even 3/8oz jigs. If you’re planning to use it for slip bobbering as well I’d bump it up to at least 6’9″ or even 7′. 6’9″ would probably be best if its primary for jigging

Wouldn’t get caught up with brand names.

Go to the store, pickup every rod in your price range and let the feel tell you how you like it. Some very nice fenwicks, 13, and others in that price range as well.

Jigging on the river M, jigging the typical MN, WI lakes, ML works.

X2 The avid 6’9″ MLXF has been my go to rod for jigging for years. Great rod for vertical or pitching jigs. I run 10 lb Power Pro with it.

I agree – I have some of each of these. The Fenwicks are nice, HMX or HMG in my opinion both are quality rods for their price point. The Str. Croix rods are nice, little spendier but not too bad, Abu Garcia Veritas…..
I agree, go to the store and pick each one up and feel the difference. I love my Veritas rods ( casting ) but my son hates the feel – personal preference I guess.
