St. Croix jig (pitching) rod nuances

Looking to add “the one” to my spinning rod lineup. I have the niche rods (vertical jig, rigs, etc.) covered pretty well, but I want something really nice for pitching 1/8 – 1/4 oz jigs.

Am I correct in thinking that the 6′-8″ MXF or 6′ 10″ MXF is better for mono and the MLXF is more tuned for braid?

Is the Extreme series any better than the Elite?

IMO you want the M for those size jigs. I agree, MXF equals mono.

Also IMO, dont let pricetags be your guidance. Pick up the rods, feel em out. I love one of my St.Croix rods, disliked the rest. Personally the higher end St.Croixs feel way to tip heavy for me.

If you like to fish in cold weather, I would stay away from the newer Extremes. The composite handles get COLD! Dave, if you would like to get a feel of the Extremes while fishing let me know. I believe I have a 6’8″ MXF and a 6’9″ MLXF you could try. The MXF has the composite handle and the MLXF has the cork.

I pitch with a 68MXF Legend Tournament. Always spooled up with 10lb braid. For a strictly pitching rod you’ll want to stay with a Medium action, it will handle heavier jigs but still can fish down to an 1/8 easily. For hooksets in current its nice to have more backbone.
I don’t care for any of my St Croix ML rods for pitching unless it’s very light jigs. They feel “whippy”

You’ll be fine with braid on a medium action rod if that’s your preference in line.

Francis, I may have to take you up on that! We’ve been talking about getting out for a while anyway. I’ve been sidetracked by bass these last 10 years and I need to get back to my walleye ways! I am partial to cork, and the new LE’s look nice.

My gut agrees with what you’re saying, Riverrat56. I have and like that rod in an Avid, but I just want something with the same power but crisper. I like 6# mono, but I do use braid too on a couple rods.

Wondering about the ES610MXF. Would this be right between the ES610MLXF and the ES68MXF?

Here are the specs. on the 2016 Legend Elites. Seems odd that the ES610MXF is only rated for up to 5/16 oz. and the ES610MLXF is rated for up to 1/2 oz.

    ES68MXF 6’8″ M X-Fast 1 6 – 12 3⁄16 – 5⁄8

    ES610MLXF 6’10” ML X-Fast 1 6 – 10 1⁄8 – 1⁄2

    ES610MXF 6’10” M X-Fast 1 6 – 12 1⁄8 – 5⁄16

I own 6 custom made StCroix LEX MLXF 6’10” rods and use them all for jig/minnow or pitching 3/32-5/16 hair jigs and even dragging jigs with 4-6 lb braided line and love them all !

I personally wouldn’t trade them for any other rod !They are very light, sensitive and have great back bone for a MLXF rod.

Good luck on choosing your new rod either way if it is a StCroix rod you will love it !
