Has anyone bought these new glass St. Croix rods? I need a new rod for Northern, so I was thinking the M in 30 inch. I have a cheapish Gander series reel, but is there something that pairs up really well with the Avid?

What do you guys think about these rods? Is it a good deal for $40 or should I just suck it up and get a TUCR?

How big are the northern you going for?
Are you using the Rod on an i fish pro or something similar?
Are you jigging in a portable?
a 30″ M rod wouldn’t be my first choice for a rod specifically set up for bigger fish rod.

We have been doing really well hole hoping outside schools of panfish and jiggins shiners, so that is my plan. Last time out we caught two 32 inchers and a bunch in the 20s. I think this body of water has the possibility for some monsters.

What would be your first choice for 20-35 inch northern?

I’d stay away from the Glass Rods.

I’d try and find something in a 32″ in Med / Heavy Rod
St. Croix has Premier rods that seem to work well.
If your’re looking at getting a TUCR, I think the
TUCR Precision Power Ice is the one you’d want. but I’d call them they’ll be able to hook you up.

But I run Shimano Sedona’s 500 (a 500 series reel maybe a little small for pike, you could go for a 1000.) and pflueger presidents on my rods.

I want to get a bigger rod and put an Okuma Baitfeeder on my big pike rod to use with an i fish pro.

Why stay away from glass? I’m guessing sensitivity isn’t the main objective here so I would have assumed glass to be a good choice.

Opps, specifically the ” Avid” Glass Rod, because i think they only come in a light application.

It looks like I was mistaken a bit as well. The Avid ice (glass) is only in the light applications, but the Avid Jigging has a carbon blank and handle. The biggest that gets is a 30″ M action.

So back to the main point, would the St Croix 30″ M carbon rod work well for northern in the 20-35″ range?
