Sprinkler / Irrigation Question

So I turned on the sprinklers today. Not because I plan on watering the yard, but because my kids wanted to run through them as it was 82 degrees

Anyway, I pay a company to blow them out in the fall but always turn them on myself without any issues. I feel dumb, but this year I can’t figure out why water is shooting out of these two ports (see pic). The sprinklers are working fine, but just don’t know why water is coming out those two ports unless I shut the whole thing off

    Any ideas?

If you are referring to the air chucks, is there a slotted screw driver port on the side to turn of the port off? In other words that had left it in the open position.

Or did they leave the chuck on and it needs them removed and the cap installed?

Turn them so the screw head slot is straight up and down. They are a bleeder valve. Inspect for cracks in the body but I can see in the pic they are slightly cocked.

Those slotted screws on the side should be perpendicular to the pipe, not the angle that it looks to be.

    You guys rock! Thank you!

That was exactly the issue…. they must have left those air chuck valves open this year and not in past years. I turned the slotted screws to the vertical position and water stopped.

    Thanks again!

I believe you meant perpendicular position to the flow of the pipe which the slot would be horizontal some what level to the earth, eh?

I turned the screws counter-clockwise (the slots are now vertical) and the water stopped

    Thanks again!

The proper position for winterizing those valves and the other valves is half shut. If left fully open for the winter a small pocket of water can get trapped between the ball and side of the valve. When this freezes it can crack the side of the valves. Im guessing this may of happened once all ready as I can see one of the valves has been replaced as some point. Those valves on the side are for testing this backflow preventor. They are supposed to be tested once a year. This is to make sure you are not getting lawn fertilizer and other stuff mixed back in with your drinking water. Im usually very busy this time of year replacing these valves, testing and repairing them.
