Anyone have any issues with the Hex Wasp optic coming off of their Springfield Hellcat? I bought a new Hellcat RDP with the optic installed from the factory a few weeks ago., went to the range yesterday and on round 5 the optic flew off and struck my forehead, leaving a nice gash. Gathered things up and the two screws that hold it on the pistol were completely gone. Not real thrilled with Springfield right now and have a message into them for discussion.

A dab of lock time on any pistol sight with a screw holding them is needed right away. I don’t care if it’s night sights or optics.

I asked Scheels (where I purchased) about loctite and they said it may be an issue with seating correctly if the screw holes are too small.

I’ve installed a few different optics on pistols and have always used blue loctite. I probably would’ve taken it off and reinstalled to make sure. I don’t trust factory installation of equipment like that. Kind of like a factory mounted scope etc. I always will remount for eye relief and check for a level reticle.

That being said, if an optic is mounted on a pistol from the factory, it shouldn’t go flying off. If they aren’t going to take the time to mount it correctly, they should just leave it off and give you instructions on how to do it IMO.

I agree with much of what you said, Pat. I checked the optic visually and did attempt to wiggle the optic but found no play. Did this while I was doing the initial cleaning of the pistol. Having the optic not only come off, but come off and strike me causing a gash…another issue.

Never had this happen with the many guns I’ve done it to.

I will be doing this with the replacement, that’s for sure. Don’t need another forehead gash…or worse.

I would personally email them. Send pictures. They have been a good company for me, but I only had one issue with my gun. It was sent in and fixed. Plus they sent me a rebate back

Springfield usually has pretty good luck with the guns they import from Croatia. To compete with other imported guns. Generally, I buy the models built in Geneseo Il. Sometime double checking becomes a casualty of increase production pressure, and new employees.

Just another screw up from Springfield. They admittedly sent a bunch of guns out without the optic mounted and with the wrong screws.

But, there’s also a bunch of instances of factory installed wasps flying off of hellcats where the factory hardware was installed with blue loctite. The FFL i go through was showing me pictures of one he just returned for a customer 2 weeks ago.

I hope my holosun doesn’t sheer off my G43X slide when I finally get a chance to finish that build.

Springfield is giving me a little run around now, attempting to connect me with the right people to discuss the personal physical harm…then nobody contacting me. Store can’t get a new one in for replacement… Starting to get old.

Other recommendations for a similar micro 9MM with an optic?

Buy a glock with optic ready slide, mos I believe glock calls it.

I think I’m going to ditch the Hellcat and get a Sig Sauer P365x (optics ready, manual safety) with a Holosun 507 optic. Similar in price, when it’s all said and done, much better optic.

That is a bad ass gun. I want one as well. I just don’t need any more 9mm. But want and need are 2 different things

I also prefer night sights over optics on anything I will carry

This or the same optic on a G43X/G48 MOS fed with shield 15 round mags.
the P365x is the most accurate compact I’ve ever shot. I’ll probably get one this winter if I’m not satisfied with my G43X MOS.

That 43x is a sweet gun. I imagine you will be happy with it.

I went with the Sig 365Xl with the Holosun 507X2 optic. Swapping it out for the Hellcat. The XL felt better in my hand, is only slightly longer, which can help with muzzle flip. Still a very small 9mm for carry, which I only do on occasion.

I bought a new Springfield hellcat and tried it at the same gun range only to have the optic come back and strike me after firing about 8 rounds – leaving a gash by my left eyebrow. I’m a fairly new shooter and this is unnerving. Is this common? The range told me the gun’s screws were stripped and too small but factory installed; brand new gun. Did you get any response from Springfield?

I’m glad I noticed this thread. I have a Hellcat OSP. I recently added the Wasp red dot, but haven’t shot it with the Wasp yet. I like the Hellcat, but not enough to deal with what I’m reading here. Im thinking it’s trade time.

If anyone is interested in my Hellcat w/Wasp send me a PM. It only has a box through it. 4 clips and a Vedder LightTuck.

They shoot very nice just have to loctite the sight on. But I recommend that on any gun.

    KwickStick, Penny Farrow, Bearcat –

I did hear back from Springfield and after some continued outreach on my part it was finally got escalated to a level where action could occur. They offered me a replacement, or a refund, and offered to cover the cost of any accessories I purchased. As it turns out Springfield claims they don’t factory install the optic, that it was sent originally with screws too short to hold the optic but there were also longer screws in the accessory bag (instructions didn’t say to use the longer ones). No amount of loctite was going to prevent this from happening, just how many rounds it would take to occur. Springfield claimed that the optic was installed at the store, therefore a shared responsibility and one that I felt through conversation they were trying to pass along. I shared with Springfield my disgust and disappointment that they have a known issue that was/is/has/continues to cause physical harm to people (optic coming off during use and becoming a projectile) and that they haven’t contacted dealers/purchasers for a recall or even to inform of this issue. Fortunately for me the store made it right enough for me by allowing for an exchange and support of accessories. I chose to support Sig Sauer and purchased a P365XL with the Holosun 507×2 and can’t be happier as of now. After having the Sig/Holosun for a short time and a few trips to the range I believe this to be a far superior product for essentially the same cost, and most importantly, with better support from the originating company. My first experience with Springfield wasn’t a positive one and for the time being will be my last.

I put 25 rounds thru my Hellcat a week a go. No issues. This past weekend,I installed the WASP. First shot at the range….yep, gash on the forehead. Sent SA an email and they immediately replied with an RMA to fix the slide as the threads are stripped out. When installed, torqued at 15 inch pounds per manual. In their reply I was told to use the new screws that they will be sending with the repaired slide. So, I guess they are now aware that there is a problem. Hopefully no one gets seriously injured.

    ssg618 –

Sorry to hear that you had the same experience. From my discussions with 3 people at Springfield and a google search not only are they aware of this serious issue now, but they have been aware for quite some time. That is the biggest disappointment to me, and seems negligent. They know about it, know it is causing injury with potential for serious injury, and aren’t addressing it unless called on their error. I also hope no one is seriously injured, which is why I’ve shared my experience as Springfield won’t. Not the type of company I choose to support.

So, does anyone know what Springfield is doing to remedy the issue? Are they just sending longer screws or are they sending a new slide with heavier screws?
I just sent my Hellcat off today and was wondering what to expect.
Any and all comments are appreciated.

I’ve been searching the web for this very same issue and landed on this page. I had my Hellcat OSP (optic ready) for two weeks and three range sessions trying to break it in when the plate and screws exploded of the slide. The plate thankfully went sideways, but one of the screws hit my glasses where it would’ve hit my eyeball. I emailed them right away and their response was, “We’ll send you out some new screws, and make sure to add a little blue Loctite to them”. That got my blood boiling since it seems that they didn’t take the time to read the email and all the info of how it hit my glasses hard enough to gouge them! I emailed back and forth with them until the rep said to send it to them. Didn’t offer a shipping label…nothing. I had to tell him that I was not about to pay to send them something brand new and defective on their watch. I had even sent them pictures of the screws clearly showing they were stripped. I have absolutely no confidence in their product, especially since it was to be my EDC. At this point I would rather they bought it and the extra magazines back so I can also go to the 365.

I had the issue with the WASP optic flying off and putting a gash in my forehead. I now have a permanent scar. I sent Hellcat to SA and all they did was sent the correct screws. Took about 2 weeks. :(. The real problem was the poor service from FedEx on the return. That added another week to my return. FedEx driver allowed a neighbor to sign for my package and then proceeded to drop package on my from porch. That was totally against the law. It was then a firearm free for the taking. If you ever send something to SA, do not allow them to return via FedEx.
So, installed WASP yesterday and that went well. I purchased a FAT torque screwdriver to make sure I had 15 inch/pounds on the screws. Going to the range Saturday with a welding helmet on just in case we have another frequent flyer. LOL
    Happy shooting.

Went to the range Saturday and prior to shooting the Hellcat w/ WASP, I marked the WASP mounting screws for reference. After shooting about 50 rounds, the screws didn’t move. So, the correct screws from SA were the answer.
Love the pistol and the optic.
    Great job Springfield.
    Happy Shooting.

ssg618 – I’m glad it finally worked out for you, and hope that continues.

Oni Zem – If you keep after SA they should give you the option to refund you for the gun and accessories, as they did for me.

I would imagine it is a quality pistol once the optic issues are resolved. For me and my money, I won’t support a company that is/has handled a very dangerous situation for their constituents in the way that Springfield has with this matter. As the consumer that is a choose I am able to make.
