Depending on the depth, fishing over it may be hazardous as springs can weaken the ice in those areas. The lake my family cabin property is on is spring fed and you need to be very careful when accessing until you get out over the first drop as there are springs along the shore than never fully freeze.
As for the fishing itself, I think overall structure of the lake might have a larger impact than where the spring is. If the lake is featureless, the spring might be enough of a “difference” to be a draw.
It will be at certain times of year, and different species will relate differently. If you have 50 degree water trickling or pour into 90 degree or 33 degree , the plume will have its moments.
Weed structure? Healthier weeds by the spring or blank habitat?
I grew up fishing private ponds that were spring fed as a kid that were just a few blocks from my house. Great flashbacks
Depending on where the spring is in relation to the lake u might wanna be careful around the edges.
The spring worked out, got three perch in a half hour. There was 12″ of ice over it. When the lake was put in, all trees were cut and removed, they burned everything. No features on the bottom. The bite has been getting better as I work my way closer to it.
where are you at?????
12 inches of ice isnt alot considering everything i’m seeing as all of 24 inches plus not to mention extensions being talked about regularly lately.
tells me I personally wouldnt want to get to much closer……..but thats just me…that’s really cold wet water under that ice!!!!!
Quiet corner of Connecticut. I am about fifty yards from the spring. There is a deep channel running along the lake on the right side. That is where the fish are sitting. I am thinking they are sitting in the water flow waiting for food. All the perch were filled with insects from the bottom.

This is fact, you can often recognize where springs are especially in clear ice. They look like a clean, previously drilled hole but with spider web like appearance on the outside of the ring and smooth surface over the hole, instead of any ice chips from drilling. Also, some spring water does not contain dissolved oxygen which will not allow a fish to respirate.
The spring is about 16 feet down. Attached is a 1934 aerial photo before the lake was made. I have circled the spring. I got the idea when I watched videos of people fishing power plant discharge waters. I figured the spring water was about 50 degrees and might have fish. Pulled nine fish from there.
