Grandpa always said start fishing crappie when the aspen start budding out. I noticed over the weekend that all the aspen in the are are doing exactly that. Anyone on the open water yet chasing them? I was hoping next weekend but it looks like snow all weekend.

If the ice is off, the sun is out, and the air is warmer than the water the crappies are moving shallow to warm up and feed before the spawn.

Guys have been fishing open water in the Twin Cities and getting limits of crappie. Last week when it was 70 Monday and Tuesday a friend went out and killed them after he found them.

Pre-spawn is a great time but they are as moody as the weather
so know where they winter know where they spawn and have in-between ideas too.

They were catch some here in the Saint Cloud area last week. Not sure what this prolonged cold front will do to them. Probably effect the fishermen more than the fish
