Spent the first week of April in Oklahoma chasing turkeys, mushrooms, and spoonbill or paddlefish. I would say it was a success Here’s the pics ! Called in a jake for this young mans first. Watched the Mrs roll yet another nice tom. Even got in on the fun myself a little.

Went out for an afternoon hunt here in KY and did a walk about. Found a spot on a field edge where I knew they hung out and sat down to take a break and listen a bit. Sure enough after 15 minutes I hear a gobble. Pull an end around get set up and call he answers and here they come .. 1 hen 2 toms and 4 jakes the hen walks right up in my face at 5 steps. The boys not so much 60ish and the skirt is on yet again. They get to where they are going to go out of sight I pull the tail fan from my vest and fan it out hold it up and call. One purrs loudly and all the heads turn red and here they come …on a run ! Now this has never worked for me before the few times ive tried it so I have no idea how long to hold the fan up or when to switch to my gun … finally at 6 yards the 2 toms are ready to do battle. I drop the fan and raise my gun turkeys are scattering Im pretty sure the gun wasnt even to my shoulder when I pulled the trigger lol. Then the short pump and click on the next attempt by now they are pushing 60 yards so I watch where they go and give them time to chill out. Pull a big end around and get set up again on them. This time its the 2 toms and 4 hens I know my chances aren’t good I crawl up to the field edge and give em the fan again and low and behold here they come again. This time I put the fan down and got my gun ready while they were at 70 yards. I let him get to 35 before I rolled him. 21 Lbs 10.25 inch beard and 1 inch spurs

Well finally punched my second tag here in KY Friday May 1 am. To say this is the most uncooperative ive ever seen turkeys would be an understatement. They were down right rude.

Id been 60-70 yards from this tom at least a half dozen times in the last week and just couldnt get him to commit or be in the right place where I could work with him. Same story Friday after watching him hit the field with a jake and 2 hens and having them hardly move 30 yards in over an hour I had all but given up on being able to get in done again on this day. But the hens finally fed around the corner allowing me to make a move. I circled the field and got almost to the spot I thought I needed to be when I bust 3 deer out into the field and they booger the turkeys across the field. I could go on an endless rant about how bad I dislike deer during turkey season but will save that for another post.

Back on the move I made another big loop hoping to get in front of them. The terrain here in KY is good for sneaking as about 15 yards into the woods theres is normally a sharp drop off allowing one to sneak and peak I call it. well I made my loop and as I snuck up the bluff to peak I could hear him strutting turns out I popped up perfectly at 25 yards I waiting for him to turn and clucked. He broke strut and poked his head up and I rolled him.

Nice tom as he weighed 22 lbs had a 10.5 inch beard and spurs just over an inch. Happy end to a rather difficult season.

Nice work Pat! A long and productive season per usual. Great to see you hunting so many far away places, and also for calling that bird in for the boy!
