Spraying for mosquitos?

How many of you here spray for bugs around your properties? What chemicals do you prefer?

I have been using DemandCS or TelStarP. They seem to have a pretty good effect. It actually makes being outside tolerable at my place.

Has anybody had better results with any other concoctions?

I use Telstar once a month and then also buy the pucks to throw in stagnant water as we have a little at the bottom of our hill. Definitely helps on mosquitoes, ticks, and Asian beetles

Eliminating standing water from your property will go a long ways. I worked for the Metropolitan Mosquito Control Agency one summer years ago in college and we basically followed the rain, looking for pools of stagnant water.

May not always be possible, obviously. Plus it’s been raining a lot this spring.

The last few years I’ve been a little cautious about not killing bees, I’ve been very insect chemical shy.

2 gallon hand pump and menards version of biferin for my farm. Spray right before dark when the Mosquitos are just coming out and bees are not out. Makes a huge difference the next day. Keeping the lawn mowed and brush thinned out helps a ton to.

    Next up Fly traps.

Cemeteries can be a skeeter source. Many of them have banned flower urns that can trap water.

I’ve sprayed Tempo SC ultra years ago.. is Biferin better? Skeeters are horrible in my backyard, along the tree line is lower and squishy from all the rain. I’m sure they are breeding like crazy

Mike, how often do you have to spray that stuff?

I can quickly tell the difference between gnats, mosquitoes, and flies when my lawn is 3.5-4″ long versus it being 2.5″ or so. I like to mow it at 3″ then cut again when it gets to 4″, but if it stays this wet I’ll be buzzing it down shorter.

Since I’m bordered on one side by a 200 acre pond and another side by a drainage culvert going into the pond, it’s probably a lost cause to spray here. I don’t like what sprays do to aquatic and amphibious critters so I wouldn’t use it even if we weren’t surrounded by a mosquito hatchery. I’ve thought about using it up at our camper, but don’t for the same reasons. A fan on the deck, campfires, and/or Thermacells scattered around is good enough for us.
