Split shot weight when trolling Flicker Minnows

A friend of mine fished with a guide who adds a 1/4 oz split shot weight 2-3′ in front of crank baits when trolling. The purpose:
    1) Prevents weeds from sliding down to the crank bait.
    2) Increased depth

Does anyone have experience with this method that can tell me how much deeper the 1/4 oz split shot will add to this trolling system?

I can’t believe nobody bit on this one.

Depending on trolling speed, that weight can decrease depth due to water resistance. Slow enough, and it could increase depth, I suppose.

Certainly helps keep things cleaner, but not enough to make it routine.

This is how my dad used to troll floating Rapalas this way. I think it is a old school thing, before deep diving cranks and lead core.
