I’ve been using a Kistler Helium LTA MH 6′-9″ for my swim jig fishing for a few years, and I’ve been pleased, but I’m doing some rod shuffling and thinking about trying my St Croix 7′ M (LT series) for swim jigs this year.

I’m curious to hear what others are using for their swim jig rods.

i have a 7ft h lt and a 7ft mh lt that i throw em on. imo a medium would be a little too soft for my taste

With braid last year I used a loomis spinner bait special rod 7 ft i don’t know the action but it isn’t the stiff action,I also used a 7′ 7power HMG fenwick rod for years and like um both. with braid I think you can go softer action and not pull the bait away as easy.

I’ve been using a 6’6″ Quantum in medium action with 15 lb Trilene Big Game.

That’s been on my mind, but maybe I’ll try braid like Bassin 7 said.

I use St. Croix Avid and LE 7′ M for swim jigs, love ’em

I’d go 6-6 to 6-10. med to med heavy is good for casting… match the line to how big a hook you got on your jig. I’m using a lightweight owner jighook so I go with lighter tackle…

    Hello Francis!

I’m a big Brovarney fan myself.

    Like the Yankem’s, too.

Tackle Warehouse has a Powell “Swim Jig” rod designed by jared lintner that sounds/looks pretty nice.

I just use my 7′ MH premier, which works great for me. Tossed them on 30 pound braid last year, but will be trying fluoro this year.

I’ve felt that rod before and I wouldnt throw a swim jig on it. But thats just me. I dont think they designed that rod for heavy cover fishing, it has a very soft tip on it. You MIGHT get away with braid on it but in my opinion it is way to soft of a rod for your typical swimjig rod

I prefer a softer rod for swim jigs, although I don’t generally throw them in the slop.

I hate owing an orange fishing pole, but my 7’2″ Carrot Stick Crankin rod coupled with braid has turned out to be one sweet swim jig rod. I started out throwing swim jigs on a 7’0 MH Avid, but lost a ton of fish on it for one reason or another so I started experimenting and found the crankin rod with braid is the way to go…for me anyway.

How big of a swim jig are you throwing is a good starting place. Where are you throwing it?? I use a 7′ avid w 20# mono for slop and flippin grass. Works great for me. I throw 1/4oz swimjigs.

I mostly throw 1/4 oz. with a 5″ Kalin grub. More broken/open cover than slop.

At this point I think I’ll just keep throwing my Kistler 6′-9″ MH. It actually fishes more like a 7′ because it has a shorter rear grip, and the bottom line is that it’s been working pretty well for me. I was naughty and just bought a high priced short range target rod, so I better stay the course on my swim jig rod for another year or so.

We use swimjigs much differently up here in these canadian shield lakes. The water is crystal clear and there is no slop, moss, grass to deal with…sparse bullrushes along rocky shorelines, some logs…
I am using a 7’4″ med baitcaster with 15# braid and a 10# flouro leader about 8′ long. The best Smallie Guide I know…Chris Beeksma (featured in In Fisherman) loves a 7’6″ Med Lite St.Croix rod with braid fishing Lake Superior with Brovarney swim baits.

Just bought a 7’3 Veritas. It is very light and seems strong.

FWIW, I ended up with a 7′ MH St. Croix LE and it’s been a fine swim jig rod. Love the tip, yet it has some solid power. I also used a 7′ M Daiwa Zillion to great effect until I broke it. That rod was simply great, especially early before the cover got thick. I’m working on a warranty replacement. The 7′ MH Croix is the main meat stick though.
