just make sure they are lubed up.

They cast a country mile even without the lube.. Without making a sound. I’ve never had a gear grind on a Quantum except for the ones in my mind asking, “Why are Quantums so awesome?”

This has nothing to do with a cranking reel, but…
I had the post about the new quantum accurist reel I bought and how it wasnt engaging smoothly.
I sent the first one back and the second one did the same thing.
I finally threw some braid on it and took it outside with my new flipping stick I got and it seemed to work great and I didn’t have that problem with the clutch sticking anymore or whatever was going on. Maybe it finally just loosened up a bit.
Anyway, I plan on putting 65lb. braid on it and using it for frogs and flipping/pitching this year, so it should be a pretty good test for strength and quality when I am winching fish out of pads. I’ll let you Quantum lovers know how it holds up

My nephews Quantum Iron grinds…of course it is an Iron, so you know he didn’t buy it yesterday. I still have my Iron and God only knows how old and abused it is. Still performs like a champ.

As for her holding a Quantum in her hand, I didn’t notice the reel model other than it was in the way.

Used to catch a ton of fish, mostly walleyes on wingdams using the older Abu 4600’s on a limberish 7′ fiberglass rod. They took the pounding pretty well and could launch a Bomber a long way. That was in the 80’s and reels have gotten better in terms of cast controls. Right now my favorite is a TD Luna 103. 5.8:1 gear ratio seems about right for me. Daiwa has since dropped the 103 size.

I’ve got a cheaper BPS “David Fritts” reel and that thing will launch a crankbait a long way. That’s a 5:1 gear ratio reel, very smooth, and it’s been a pretty good reel, but it mostly sits, or I use the rig for trolling.

i will second the old bps fritts reels except the 4.7:1 gearing. i like the slower speeds for deep cranking to slow down the speed of the crank to walk it along the bottom and not have to change my retrieve speed from a higher geared reel.
