Looking to get a new setup for this year…I am looking for a rod for jig fishing that will still be heavy enough to fish frogs and heavy cranks. Any one have any suggestions? I already have a reel in mind (pflueger), I just need a rod. Aroud $100 bucks give or take $10-20 would be alright.

    Thanks for suggestions!

Jake check out the Mojo line from St Croix. I bought the “Crankbait” rod last year and love it. Only problem is I’ve had a chance to hold their Eyecon series in my hand and….well I think I know what’s going to happen. Good rods for the money.

I think you need two completely different rods… A 7′ to 7.5′ MH or H, Fast or extra fast action. And a 7’+ moderate action crankbait rod.

    x2.

I would be using two different lines for each of these applications as well.

I already have a 7’medium St. Croix for crankin, and it works awesome. I guess I really just need a good rod for jig fishing.

    MBC70MHF / Spinnerbait
A perfect rod for searching open water with big spinnerbaits for active fish. It’s also ideal for jigs, worms and working heavy cover. If you spool on some 40# braid this rod will “get by” on frogs, although I prefer a 7′ H Fast/50# braid…
Your current 7’MF will also work with finesse/Swimjigs and Senkos…

If I’d pick a rod that’s very verstle jig / spinnerbait / frog I’d buy a Cabelas Fish Eagle 2 in a 703 or 704 1 piece retail I belive is around $80 love the action on these rods.

Definitely check out Abu Garcia! The Veritas and Vendetta lines are very low in weight and well construced. I’ve had my fair share of Mojo’s and the new Abu rods are the deal for under $100.

Although, I would maybe consider spending an extra couple bucks and checking out the St. Croix Premiers.

hey jake. $120 limit. I’m an ebay guy. I’ve bought a bunch of new or nearly new rods on ebay for probably over 60% off new price. All of them older All Stars.
If I was in the market for a jig rod, I’d look at Falcon, St croix or American rodsmith. you would at least want a 7fter hvy action. 7-6 would be the best. but to be honest, you put 30-40 or 50 # braid on just about any rod, and it is a jig rod. I have a bunch of 6′-10″ rods that combined with the right line get some jiggin’ done! easy on the arms and hands too.
Some night, grab some beer and hit ebay fishing see what shows up.
FYI those american rodsmith rods with the golf grips really caught my eye.

I’m a St. Croix guy but I’m VERY impressed with these new Abu Garcia rods. Very light weight, and stiff, just like a St. Croix. Even rated lower than a St. Croix, i.e. a Med Abu is like a Med Hvy St. Croix, and St. Croixs are generally stiffer than their ratings…

hey red, those rods look nice for 99 free shipping. I myself don’t like the split grip deal. full cork grips for me. Still nice pick up for 99$!

Nothing more than personal preference to me. Just feels weird casting it. Now I am second guessing my knee jerk response. Its been so long since I have cast that maybe I jumped the gun a bit. I just know it feels different.

    Red,

The BuCoos are super light in weight! They remind me a lot of their LowRider series of rods. I had a LowRider at one point and that was one of my most sensitive and lightest rods. Very impressed with them. I was in Cabelas today and the BuCoos are almost a spitting image of the Cara’s. Very similar as far as cosmetics and weight.

In my honest opinion, I don’t think there are any bad rods out there anymore. On saying that, I do believe however that all rods are not created equal.

At first I was the same way with the split grip. But I think its just a matter of giving it time and getting used to them. Dont forget that they made these for a reason, to reduce the weight and add sensitivity. They also look a lot cooler Dont give up on them too quick

and the cork doesn’t get all black and grimey!
I agree 100%… at first I didn’t like the idea, but after fishing my first Extreme spin rod… I don’t even think about it anymore…

Veritas is one that I have considered a lot, because of the price and lots of good reviews.
Is it just me, or are the reel seats with that aluminum screw down piece just stupid on those abu rods, though? I much prefer the fuji reel seats with that little notch on the screw down piece.
First time I put my revo on a vendetta rod, that aluminum screw down scratched the paint right off the reel. Not a big deal, but just weird to design something that does that.

I think premiers are great, but it would be nice to compare it with something like a veritas side by side once.

The goofy reel seat screw is the only thing that stops me from buying them rods.

I don’t think the real seats on the Veritas are bad at all. I’m going to agree with you on the Vendettas though. They do feel a little weird.

Don’t take my word for it, but I THINK Cabela’s in PdC might still have a couple Premiers on the rack, but with you being in Winona it might be better for you to go to Owatonna (sp?)

Aren’t the reel seats about the same on the veritas and vendetta? They both have the aluminum screw down piece. Thats the part I don’t like.

I can get premiers cheaper at other places

Also considering a Falcon BuCoo (BCC-5-1610)

I’m not sure if the St. Croix Premiers are still under $100, but I like them a lot in that general price range.

I took a chance and ordered a Temple Fork Outfitters spinning rod last year. They run $100, and for the price, I have been extremely pleased with it. I will likely be considering a casting model when I need a new one.

The downside is that I have not seen them locally, so you might chance getting something you don’t personally like.

    Check them out, though.

Anybody ever try an All Star ASR? I know that everyone prefers the older ones, before they were bought by pure fishing or whatever…. but just wondering about these new ones.
IM10 graphite, Fuji Alconite guides, Split Grip. Looks nice.

Never mind what I said about split grips before. I’ve used mine several times this spring without even remembering what I said. In other words, I didn’t even notice.

The Veritas and Vendetta lines are very low in cost but are very nice in sensitivity. Times eight with the people posting above me.
