    Here’s another “cabin fever” post…

I fish mostly gin clear “Canadian Shield” type lakes in the U.P and Wisc border, I imagine similar to MilleLacs or Chequamegon Bay… I am curious as to how others rig for a day on the water during early season?

Thanks for your choice of northern Bass rigs for early June… Here are my four… scroll down

4 rod and reel rigs for early season:

1: Dobyns Champion 733 MH/F rod with Quantum Accurist reel with 14 lb test 832 or Fireline Crystal with 10 lb Vanish Florou leader for swim jigs and top water… actually this rod can do just about anything…

2: Dobyns Champion 735 H/F rod with Quantum Accurist reel filled with 30 lb 832 or Fireline Crystal and 10 lb ST florou leader for running cranks, lipless cranks, smaller swimbaits.

3: St. Croix Legend Tournament Teaser LTBC70MF with Quantum reel with clear 14lb Sufix Siege mono or FC for suspending jerkbaits and Spinnerbaits

4: Legend Extreme LEX610MXF with Pflueger Arbor reel with 10 lb Sufix 832 or FC and 8 to 10 lb flor ST leader for finesse plastics, Senkos and drop shotting.

I am want to Drop shot a lot more this coming open water season.

    Tom,

You have to add a StCroix AVS68MXF with 8 lb mono for a 1/4 jig head and 4-5″ K-grub. Fluoro would be great but can be to stiff in cold water.

This last spring I had a lot of luck running a baby bass fluke on a 6’6″ St. Croix MH Avid spinning rod with 15# braid for smallies upo at my parents cabin (secci disc 14ft). Stop in the right spots and they usually picked it up on the first couple casts, if that failed then I went in with a tube rigged with a Title SHot jig and rattles rigged on my standard 7 MH Avid Baitcaster and 17# flouro.

John, I picked up an LEX 610MXF just before our Nov trip to Everts and used it where I would normally employ a 68MXF for K Grubs on P-4 and it worked well, but I don’t think I’d drop another large amount on an LEX 68MXF. I like your idea of getting an AVS68MXF instead and buy a bunch more tackle!

    early season…
    1. 6ft spinning rod, (an old all star, tenn handle, ) 6# line. 1/8 oz smoke grub.
    2. baitcasting rod, your choice, 10# line, suspending jerkbaits.
    3. float n fly set up. this can be surprising good in the early spring.
That would be the only 3 for sure. then you can add a bunch more for fun. been stuck inside all winter you know… I’m gonna try a green pumkin swimbait (lake fork) real slow too.
Already got my first trip planned, Sacandaga res. ice out.
