I know I’m a Walleye guy, but this seems to help me no matter what species I’m going after. I try to match my jig to the forage that is the target in that body of water, then I play with the jig in water shallow enough I can see how it reacts to my rod movements and how it would mimic the forage, how it reacts to objects such as logs/weeds ect.

It gives me a better idea of what’s going on down there when I can’t see it.

There are several types of jig heads and those will determine what’s better technique for it, from swimming to bottom crawling. For example a football head is good for crawling along the bottom. Besides, it’s jigging. Jig, jig, jig.
