I was about to put the pole down and head in early when I heard a what sounded like a 100 lb. lab hittin’ the water after a wounded greenhead. I turn to look and see bass, I mean BIG bass full body launching like synchronized swimmers. The shad were going nuts trying to escape. I saw mother nature at its best. I zipped across at mach whatever my trolling motor can do and threw a Pop-R through the leftover ripples and the game was on. The smallest was 16 inches with many 18’s and 2 19 inchers. When the topwater no longer produced, I ran a money minnow and had a series of 8 casts with fish. When that subsided, I went with a crankbait of some sort. I’m not a crankin’ guy, so I don’t even know what it’s called. But, that produced too. I then switched to a white Buzz Bait and had a dandy pike clobber the crap out of that lure. He’s still showin’ that one off to his buddies at the ‘ol lilly pad saloon. Bummed to lose my favorite Buzz (except the one from blackberry brandy). They were fat, prolific, and positively fun. It became the best 2 hours of the summer (fishing wise). Here’s hoping there’s more to come.
