Typically when is the best time to head to Ashland WI for the Smallies on Lake Superior??
Iam looking at a potential trip and want my best chance at good luck.
Is this starting off as a “typical” year?
If a person was making the run up there, what seems to be the bait(s) of choice?
Thanks for any help or advice, If needed feel free and PM me.

No this is not a typical year. I heard yesterday that the smallies were in pretty heavy, but only heard that in one report. I had one guy stop by the musky shop yesterday that was heading up and he was very excited about his trip!!!

They are certainly going strong right now up here in the Minocqua area and I know of several guys doing very well on the brownies!!!

I’d say normally mid-May to mid-June in a normal year. This is not not one them, so am sure, like everywhere else, it is a few weeks ahead of schedule. Shallow water areas with 2′ to 4′ of water around some wood is helpful.

You really do not need any live bait, but you do see people using it.

small jig/pigs, tubes, worms, stick worms are all good.

Am sure the fish are going now but can’t find a report or post.

Good Luck, give us an update/report and do include some pics.

    It’s a great area.

    Haywood…
I have been up there several times and the fishery is amazing…But it is a huge body of water and shallow with lots of scattered wood and weedbeds.
I would HIGHLY reccomend a guide trip with Chris Beeksma, GetBit Guide Service, to learn the terrain. There is none better…even In Fisherman uses him on the Bay.

Hey Mark, Hope all is well. I know it is hard to get good help up there, They all seem to want to be out fishing!
I hope to get up there soon and perhaps use it as a jump-off point to Ashland for a goo day trip.
    Thanks for the info!

I will, will see him tomorrow a.m. for an install. I know he did well last week Tues./Wed. bassin’ as usual and know that he had a pretty good Sun. two seeks ago finding a nice pod of gills for his wife and daughter to play with!!!

I am thinking about trying for some smallies in combo tonight with ‘eyes on cranks or going up to one of the experimental lakes for muskies just to kick off the season in this great weather!!!
