I cheated, the first pic is Florida and the second is Alabama. The next two are from southern MN lakes this fall and the last one was great lakes smallies from this May. In the fourth pic my buddy is holding fish I caught. I was too down in the dumps for a picture since I lost one a lot bigger than either fish in the pic that day.

Well, its Jan 1, 2011 and the lakes are froze. Here’s looking back at 2010 and a few that were caught in my boat

2010 was a banner year for Bass fishing… here are a few from guiding and “pre fishing”

Don’t tell the catfish guys but I cheated on my favorite skinfish on Saturday morning. I was fishing cats and a guy a ways off was catching mad numbers of decent fish, so I reeled in the chunk of cut bait I was using and grabbed my ultralight… St. Croix 7′ and ran over there.

I thought he was catching crappies (because it’s a known crappie spot) but turns out it was crazy numbers of NICE smallies… and there’s nothing as fun as a 2# bronzeback on an ultralight.

But if the catfish fans find out they’ll tease me so really, don’t tell!

I hate to rain on your parade, but targeting smallmouths on that section of river now is illegal. You’ve got to be downstream of the Ford Dam for year-round C&R fishing.

You can’t really be accused of targeting smallmouth when you’re fishing with a 7′ ultralight and a 1/16 oz crappie jig. In known crappie waters.

But, it sure was fun. And even the most die-hard curmudgeon can’t take away the memory of such an unexpected treat.

Call me what you will, but if you are catching out of season fish, it is your responsibility to move or change tactics. One fish is an accident. Two fish is probably an accident, but when your bass start outnumbering your crappies, you’ll be hard pressed to find a CO that will buy your story, no matter what gear you are using.

Not trying to “take your memory away”, just trying to clarify reguluations.

Its hard to tell, but Josh is holding one that is right at 4…the pic is pretty bad cause its sideways. I actually caught that 4 and that 6 back to back
