I’m having a crankin’ rod built as a gift for a lifelong buddy of mine.

I’m thinking it will be a 7′ St.Croix, but I won’t know for sure until tomorrow.

Anyway, what would you guys use for a baitcaster for this rod? We will be fishing almost exclusively for Smallmouth.

Revo STX – You can cast a crankbait a mile with this reel.

The Shimano Calais is a really nice reel, I have three and they have been bulletproof so far.

Not sure if you want to spend this much for someone else. But they would sure love it. I would put the Shimano Core 50 MG. Light as they come. And if you fishing for Small Mouth all day. You want lite.

I would recommend a Quantum Tour Edition. Great Reels, really good for casting light cranks all day, Just ordered my second one can’t wait. He must be a good friend.

I’ll second the Abu Garcia REVO STX. Between my dad and I we have 6 of them and yes they cast a country mile and are extremely smooth all around and light too. Good Luck with your decision and congrats on the custom rod.

I second this! i have 5 or 6 quantums and love them all. That and they look sweet too. If you can afford it get the new tour edition or the new tour kvd. Otherwise the old tour editions and energys i believe you can find on ebay for 100 bucks or so…new too, last time i checked they did atleast. good luck with ur decision

I use the Quantum line for guiding and all my tournament fishing. They are great reels at a good price piont. Any of the Quantum PT series reels are good.

I ended up with one St. Croix Legend crankin’ rod and one Phenix Flukin’ rod from Aaron at Fishinfreaks.
