New reel

Some years ago a major tackle store went out of business in Green Bay. I had been fishing Garcia and Lews reels on my baitcasters and that day I was really impressed by the Quantum TI series and bought three at 1/2 price.
They have been flawless..but I have the itch for a couple new ones…
I am looking at getting two new reels in the “under $150 ea range”.
I fish swimbaits, wacky rigs, worms, tubes and Senkos on a 7′ medxfast rod…12# Flouro
I fish cranks, top waters, jerks, spinner baits, buzzbaits on a LTBC 70MHF…. 14# Braid

I’d appreciate any recommendations…Even though I post a lot of Walleye reports, I’m a diehard Bass guy too! Just haven’t been following the reel technology for quite a while…

Tom, A little humor for the day…. Sorry I cannot comment on the reels but…. a lot of techniques you mentioned no longer work.. Cranks, Topwaters, Jerkbaits blade baits are no longer effective for 2010. New for 2010 would be Carolina Rigged Buzzbaits and Drop Shotting Docks.

Shimano Curado E5 and E7’s are really good reels and I beleive they will be in your price range during the thorne brothers spring sale. They are normally $179 but will be on sale during this event. Stop in and talk with josh or give him a call and tell him joe sent you and he will do his best to get you what you need for the price you are comfortable with. No problems

I have a few Revo STX. I break at least one per year. Very smooth. The one that I break is lined with braid and I use it for swimjigs. Thus it takes a lot of abuse and shock.

I have 5 Shimano Curado E7’s with 3 having 40 pound Power Pro and haven’t had a problem with any of them. Had the old green Curado’s before these and untill losing them in the flood never had a problem with them either.

I cannot crank fast enough to run a Buzzbait behind a Carolina rig Theodore…getting old I guess…
Lucky thing Kevin VanDamme doesn’t know crankbaits are passe’ now…

Blades DEFINITELY DO NOT WORK ON P-4

    Anyone try a Pflueger President?

Ill second the curados for toughness. Revos are great for awhile but seem to wear down easier. The old green curados are tanks, the new ones i guess the jury is still out but i havent had a problem. I think pfleuger are awesome in the store but otw performance/longevity not as good as either revo or curado imho. look out for bass pro sales or tackle warehouse sales to get them under $150. I think bass pro still has that reel exchange in march where you can bring an old one in and get a new one for $50 off

Can’t go wrong with the Currado’s or the Revo’s. Gander Mountain has a Great deal on Revo Premiers. They are selling them for $139.00 and you get another $10.00 off with a rebate form. That is a $270.00 reel for only $129.00 – great buy. Think of it as a 2 for 1 deal.

I run the Pflueger Presidents for spinning reels. I had a great experience with their customer service. They shipped out parts to me really fast with a Net 14 billing. I paid them right away. The eschelon baitcaster I tried was a $60 reel new (approx) and it felt like a $60 reel.. It was ok at best. The Curados are fantastic. I have 5 so far & whenever I use something that is not a Curado.. it takes a bit to get used to them.

The sale goes from April 16th to the 18th with huge sales on everything in the store. I beleive that when you purchase a reel they will wind it full of line for free also.

What breaks on them? I have 2 Revo SX and one Revo STX and have had no problems at all. I would sure like to know what to look for in the future.

My buddy has a few of them and everytime he sets the hook his rudder pads on the handle fall off in his hand.

between my dad and I we have 6 of the REVO STX models and absolutely love em. I fish any and every bass presentaion with them including swimbaits and cranks and in my boat they’ve stood the countless hours on hours of hard fishing. Cant say anything about the curados though as i havnt used one yet. From what i hear they are probably great reels too. If I was going to get another one today it would be a revo STX. Not sure if they quit making the STX though?? Good Luck and dont let them wally guys hagle ya too much

Maybe I’m just a die hard fisherman?
If you look back on my reports you’lll see more Bass than Walleye/Sauger reports for the past 8 years. I started fishing Bass Tournaments on the Mississippi 43 years ago. I guess my age is showing…
I fish Walleye from March thru April because the season (Bass) is closed til the end of May here. Then its pretty much Bass until late October.
I guess I prefer to enjoy all fishing… a 12 lb Walleye gets me just as excited as a 7 lb Bass.

well mr Tom, For the Applications you are looking for, I’d start looking around for 2 new REVO STX’s, one 7 to 1 the other 6.4 to 1. some of older models are selling cheap check ebay. I like the STX over the premier for casting jobs. the premier is saved for pitching and jigging.
I have 4 revos as described above. great free spool. The infinite II deal is amazing.
I may be back with details on where to find some… stay tuned…

I had a few President’s & Summit’s,thought they were great for the 1st year or two. Performance slipped after that. The gears wore down in the President’s. I can take the spool tensioner off and see how the teeth in the gear have been worn, occasionally skipping. And the drag failed on the Summit’s. Going back to Shimano Curado’s this year.

I just picked one of these up to try.

    Quantum® Catalyst® PT™ Casting Reels

Figured with them being $50 off right now and then having a Strike King Sexy shad bait kit coupon why not give it a shot. They seem to have good reviews as well. Was looking for a little higher gear ratio 7.0:1 for froggin’.

Just want to thank you for your input on the Pflueger Summits….I’ve got a new Croix Legend Elite, 7’MF and I was really looking hard at putting a Summitt on it. Guess I’ll pass if the performance fades by a season or two.
