I’ve been invited to fish a small bass contest on a semi-private lake near Hackensack, MN this weekend. The group is a small group of college friends and I’ve been invited along as someone’s fishing ringer!
The lake is very small from what I’ve been told. Given the type of lake found in that area and the time of year, what would be your 1-2 suggestions on how to lure a lunker largemouth to the boat.

Livebait? Casting certain type of crank? Spinnerbait? Artificial worm?

Help!! I have not targeted bass in 3-4 years.

Berkley Chigger Craws texas rigged. green flake pumpkin. 2/0 or 3/0 red gammy ewg hooks. you will murder them.

also get a couple of rat-l-traps.

This time of year I love throwing big crank baits. Look for green weeds….I can’t stress that enough. The greenest weeds will hold the biggest fish. Use the crank bait to dredge some up so you can see what they look like. The bass will use both the outside weed edge and the inside edge too. Don’t be afraid to pitch up into a few feet of water.

Sounds like you’re in for some fun!

A large 6-7 inch sucker minnow or shiner under a slip bobber. Fish the deep weed edges. You will fight through a bunch of pike, but the bass you get will be big!

If there is any pads or other slop on the lake. you can’t go wrong with a scum frog this time of the year. Or better yet a live frog if you can get you hands on a few. Best of luck to you. lets us know how you do.

+1 on fall green weeds = big fish. Favorite fall bait is a swim jigs snapped through the tops and outsides of thick weed lines. It’s work, but it produces.

Just caught 5 bass over 21 inches using a texas rigged blue worm on a 3/0 gammy worm hook. Use a light bullet weight and let it flutter off of deep weed edges. Be patient. Let it sit and wait for your line to tighten. I caught a 23 inch 6 lber that I casted to 3 times before I was able to set the hook. The last time I let it sit nearly a minute before he took it. Fish slow! Too many people fish past way too many fish because they are just moving to fast.

I’D USE A DEEP DIVING CRANKBAIT ON THE POINTS WHERE THE BEST DEEPEST “GREEN” WEEDS ARE.RIVER DELTAS USUALLY HAVE THE BEST DEEPEST GREEN WEEDS IF AVAILABLE.FOLLOW THE CONTOUR UNTIL YA FIND-EM. AFTER YOU’VE LIMITED OUT I WOULD GO BACK TO THE AREAS THAT HAVE BEEN THE BEST AND FISH THE OUTSIDE EDGES SLOWER WITH A JIG AND #11 PORK FROG OR A BEAVER CREATURE BAIT. BIG THINGS WILL COME!!! BEST CRANKBAIT COLORS ARE DICTATED BY WATER CARITY. CLEAR=BLUE CHROME COLORED=BLACK SILVER OR BLACK GOLD. STAINED= CHARTRUSE FIRETIGER OR BONE. I’VE BEEN HAVING GREAT LUCK WITH CRANKBAITS IN CLEAR WATER USEING FLUEROCARBON LINE 10#. GOOD LUCK

try slow rolling a spinnerbait along the weed edges, maybe pitch a jig to shallower isolated mats of grass as well, good luck
