Northern Wisconsin Stream Smallies

THis coming weekend, I will be on a small river that runs into the Flambeau River. I know that there are smallmouths in the river because I catch them all the time in the spring. The summer bite is virtually non-existant. All we can catch are decent sized northerns and every once in a while a giant muskies. If anyone has any help on what presentations to use or what types of areas I should be fishing, let me know. Any help would be awesome!!!

I would look for the deeper holes below the faster water. What presentations have you been trying, I guess they are not working. One of my favorite stream presentations is to throw a super fluke and senko style worms. Rig the senkos wacky style and just let them drift with the current. are you in a boat, wading or on shore? If you aren’t catching them on what your trying change often until you start to hook up. If anything throw a bucktail and chase those big muskies. hopefully this helps, Dan

Most all streams and rivers are running very low and clear in the area. Deep holes with some flow, or topwater near shoreline or weed cover may be your best options. A smaller Mepps spinner is a proven producer under these types of conditions.

Yup on the upper croix by my cabin, the best smallie bait is a #2 mepps black fury. Second best is a texas rigged green salt tube pitched under overhanging trees. A well pitched BFT paddle tail has done well too on a light jig. We like to get the fly rods out up there too and use poppers or black wooley buggers. Any place you can’t see the bottom clearly is a good place. We’ve seen a hundred stacked under one tree and nothing for miles on occaision.

I would be interested in knowing what smaller river runs into Flambeau. is it around Ladysmith?
I have fished the Flambeau at least once a year since the early nineties. I have had great luck recently on t-rigged Berkley Chigger Craws. Tubes are fabulous and jointed, floating rapalas in firetiger have been great. I am going to the Mepps spinners again this year but to tell you the truth plastic just flat out beats the spinners IMHO. I recently read that some of the larger smallies will relate to weed during the day. Texas-rigged unweighted plastics are the way to attack this. I am going up for a week the end of July. Going to fish the area that run adjacent to Hwy 70 out of Fifield. we usually have fantastic action on smallies, muskie and walleye. walleye are a little tougher but we always manage a few for a fish fry.

The river I am fishing is called Skinner Creek, just north of Hawkins, WI. It really is more of a river than a creek. P.S. I found out yesterday that there are walleyes in this “creek”, anyone have any tips on how to catch them??
